An excerpt from the article:
Though raising an infant has been challenging, Bristol has the unconditional love and support of her family — especially her mother, Sarah Palin. After all, no one can better understand the complicated decision to have a baby under difficult circumstances. Just a year earlier, at the age of 44, Sarah carried her son Trig to term, even though she was told during a sonogram that he would be born with Down syndrome. Now, the mother and daughter are sharing a unique experience— raising baby boys together under the same roof.

And OMG I am slow, but... what is the relationship between these two babies? They're not cousins. They're not siblings. Help me!

Date: 2010-01-14 05:14 pm (UTC)THAT IS SO BIZARRE!
I have a friend who had a daughter when she was very young, and so they look more like sisters than mother-daughter. The daughter is now grown up, and they both ended up having babies the same year. For the life of me it always confuses me as to what these two kids are to each other. It's so rare. Can you imagine being pregnant the same time as your mother? LOL!

Date: 2010-01-14 06:03 pm (UTC)This is amazing stuff for two reasons. First of all, it looks like for once somebody not part of the conservative media isn't out for character assassination against Sarah Palin.
Second, I can only imagine how that cover will change the minds of many women out there contemplating abortion, including those who want to abort their Down's Syndrobe babies.

Date: 2010-01-14 06:08 pm (UTC)I, too, cringed at the "even though" phrasing. I don't understand how people can't see that aborting a baby with Down's (or any other ailment) is no different than Hitler's goal to get rid of everyone not "perfect". The motives may be different, but the result is the same.

Date: 2010-01-14 07:34 pm (UTC)As a young mom who nearly had an abortion (and my child just turned three yesterday), I can sum it up in one word for you.
Selfishness.
MY life.
MY wants.
What I want when I want it.
Not wanting to change how I live.
Not wanting to wait for someone else.
Not wanting to lose MY home, MY friends, MY freedom, MY job.
Not wanting MY body to change.
Not wanting to deal with the social stigma against ME.
It's usually not about desperate situations. It's about wanting the status quo and willing to sacrifice another person to keep it.

Date: 2010-01-14 07:47 pm (UTC)This makes me think of a line in Law & Order: SVU (which tends to be more liberal anyway). Detective Olivia Benson is herself the product of a rape, but when asked by one of her coworkers what she would do if she was raped, she said, "I'd take the morning after pill - no hesitation." In saying that she basically just said that her life is not worth living. All those bad guys she put away - who cares? Kill the child conceived in rape. Oh, that made me SO MAD.

Date: 2010-01-14 06:36 pm (UTC)I have a Downs Syndrome brother (his name is Andrew). When Palin says that her son has enriched her life ten fold, I believe her ... Because that's how I feel about my brother. My entire family feels so fortunate to have Andy in our lives. My brother is perfect the way he is.
Anyway, whenever I listen to the Gloria Steinems of the world claiming that they're speaking for all women, I want to tell them to shut up. Sarah Palin "speaks for me" much more than they ever could!

Date: 2010-01-14 07:39 pm (UTC)What's actually kind of funny is, awhile back, I was watching The View. They were discussing "DIY Childbirth" - or Unassisted Childbirth (UC), which is giving birth with no professional medical attendants present, usually at home. It's something I support, and I know several people who have done it, and say it's the most empowering thing EVER. Anyway - the hosts of The View were HORRIFIED, and kept saying that they didn't think ANY woman should be "allowed" to do this, and they brought up the issue of safety for the baby, and I THINK someone said that women who do this should be prosecuted for child neglect, etc.
IF they don't believe that a fetus is a baby UNTIL it's born, and all the "DIY Childbirth" stuff occurs BEFORE the baby is born, so UNTIL the baby is born and UP TO AND INCLUDING the method of childbirth then... how do you reconcile that with MY BODY MY CHOICE? If it's MY body, and MY choice, then it's MY choice to give birth the way I want to, and you don't have any right to tell me otherwise.
So STFU, Joy Behar & Co.

Date: 2010-01-15 04:13 am (UTC)While I'm glad Sarah Palin did continue her pregnancy, it really irritates me that the article phrases it as if it was some majorly unusual choice to make. As if the obvious and 'normal' thing to do would be to abort Trig because he wasn't 'perfect'.
