There's really not much editorializing I can do here. Bristol Palin wrote an entry on her blog and she makes some really great points, and I just wanted to highlight them for those that haven't seen it yet.
Dear President Obama,
You don’t know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next. You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After all, you didn’t want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:
“One of the things I want them to do as they get older is engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on,” you said. “I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens.”
And I totally agree your kids should be able to speak their minds and engage the culture. I look forward to seeing what good things Malia and Sasha end up doing with their lives.
But here’s why I’m a little surprised my phone hasn’t rung. Your $1,000,000 donor Bill Maher has said reprehensible things about my family. He’s made fun of my brother because of his Down’s Syndrome. He’s said I was “f—-d so hard a baby fell out.” (In a classy move, he did this while his producers put up the cover of my book, which tells about the forgiveness and redemption I’ve found in God after my past – very public — mistakes.)
If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you. After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager. That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom — you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits.
Yet I wonder if the Presidency has changed you. Now that you’re in office, it seems you’re only willing to defend certain women. You’re only willing to take a moral stand when you know your liberal supporters will stand behind you.
But…
What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?
I’m not expecting your SuperPAC to return the money. You’re going to need every dime to hang on to your presidency. I’m not even really expecting a call. But would it be too much to expect a little consistency? After all, you’re President of all Americans, not just the liberals.
I think if Obama had an ounce of integrity, he would have issued a public apology calling out those who degrade all women whether he chooses to return Bill Maher's dirty money or not.

Date: 2012-03-20 10:50 am (UTC)Apparently, the word 'slut' isn't immoral in and of itself, to listen to them talk. What apparently determines the morality or immorality of the word is who uses it, and against whom. Linbaugh uses it, and the Left considers it a crime against all humanity. Maher uses it, and the Left gives a collective shrug.
It also ties into President Obama's call for "civility" after the Giffords shooting. Of course, his side continued to say really nasty things both before AND after the incident. I guess civility is what the other side does ...
I think a lot more people would have, if not let it slide, at least not be as infuriated if he hadn't mentioned his daughters -- because in doing so, and in then turning a blind eye to attacks against conservatives, he comes off as a tremendous hypocrite.

Also, remember after the Ft. Hood shooting? Everything was coming out about the shooter's Muslim background, his contacts with radical figures, and what he was screaming while he was on his shooting rampage, and yet Obama was telling people not to jump to conclusions. Then with the incident recently where a soldier killed 16 people in Kandahar (a horrible tragedy itself), Obama immediately labelled the soldier a murderer, without giving a second pause to unearth anything about the soldier's background (how many tours had he served, had he suffered any serious injuries recently, did he have any mental health issues, etc). Obama's double standard's been well known throughout his Presidency.

Date: 2012-03-19 05:16 pm (UTC)The heinous prejudice against Trig Palin has been a sore point with me for years. There has never been an excuse for it. It's immature to say the least, if not hateful, from those who are unable, or who refuse, to debate Sarah Palin on political points as civil human beings.

Date: 2012-03-20 02:14 pm (UTC)It's also only recently that I have learned that pro-abortion people get upset when you call them that, and that they insist on being called "pro-choice" as you've described here. That one is really bizarre, since as you have illustrated, anyone who CHOOSES to keep their child in circumstances like the Palin family experienced are met with the hatred we all saw. So what "choice" are they talking about? For that side, there's only one choice that's acceptable to them.

Date: 2012-03-21 02:46 am (UTC)I tend to skirt this issue by using the term "abortion apologist." Aside from added alliterative appeal, it's polite but it negates the use of euphemisms. ...Well, unless I'm irritated, in which case it's "pro-abortion" all the way whether they like it or not. Or, if I'm really pissed off, "anti-life."

Date: 2012-03-21 02:55 am (UTC)I know, right? It's all so confusing.
Hm, abortion apologist. I think I may try using that in conversations. Thanks!

Yeah, imagine that.

Date: 2012-03-19 08:37 pm (UTC)A conservative FB friend posted this and of course everyone's like, "But he's a Republican and you Republicans hate women. Also, no one condemned him!" Um, okay. (The FB friend is a woman and active in local politics.)
