There's really not much editorializing I can do here. Bristol Palin wrote an entry on her blog and she makes some really great points, and I just wanted to highlight them for those that haven't seen it yet.

Dear President Obama,

You don’t know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next. You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After all, you didn’t want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:

“One of the things I want them to do as they get older is engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on,” you said. “I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens.”

And I totally agree your kids should be able to speak their minds and engage the culture. I look forward to seeing what good things Malia and Sasha end up doing with their lives.

But here’s why I’m a little surprised my phone hasn’t rung. Your $1,000,000 donor Bill Maher has said reprehensible things about my family. He’s made fun of my brother because of his Down’s Syndrome. He’s said I was “f—-d so hard a baby fell out.” (In a classy move, he did this while his producers put up the cover of my book, which tells about the forgiveness and redemption I’ve found in God after my past – very public — mistakes.)

If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you. After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager. That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom — you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits.

Yet I wonder if the Presidency has changed you. Now that you’re in office, it seems you’re only willing to defend certain women. You’re only willing to take a moral stand when you know your liberal supporters will stand behind you.

But…

What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?

I’m not expecting your SuperPAC to return the money. You’re going to need every dime to hang on to your presidency. I’m not even really expecting a call. But would it be too much to expect a little consistency? After all, you’re President of all Americans, not just the liberals.

I think if Obama had an ounce of integrity, he would have issued a public apology calling out those who degrade all women whether he chooses to return Bill Maher's dirty money or not.

She makes a VERY good point. The double standard is insane.

This is actually the mindset. I can't tell you how many times I've heard liberals excusing this or that filth said by a fellow public liberal about conservatives, because he/she is "just a comedian".

Like I said before on mividaloca99's blog, it's a very interesting game the Liberals are playing.

Apparently, the word 'slut' isn't immoral in and of itself, to listen to them talk. What apparently determines the morality or immorality of the word is who uses it, and against whom. Linbaugh uses it, and the Left considers it a crime against all humanity. Maher uses it, and the Left gives a collective shrug.

It also ties into President Obama's call for "civility" after the Giffords shooting. Of course, his side continued to say really nasty things both before AND after the incident. I guess civility is what the other side does ...

I think a lot more people would have, if not let it slide, at least not be as infuriated if he hadn't mentioned his daughters -- because in doing so, and in then turning a blind eye to attacks against conservatives, he comes off as a tremendous hypocrite.

Not sure. I edited the original, but that shouldn't override the screening process, should it?

I can stop posting if easier, just let me know.

Thanks,

I swear this is a word-for-word quote of a post I saw on another site. It makes my blood boil when people actually say this and think that it's completely reasonable.

No, he can't be a comedian. Comedians are funny.

Well said, Bristol.

The heinous prejudice against Trig Palin has been a sore point with me for years. There has never been an excuse for it. It's immature to say the least, if not hateful, from those who are unable, or who refuse, to debate Sarah Palin on political points as civil human beings.

Yes, indeed. Why anyone would think it's acceptable to say such horrible things about an innocent child is beyond me.

I've thought about this for a bit, and yeah, I'm going to go here, if only briefly. People think it's okay to say that stuff about Trig because he is an innocent child...who isn't supposed to have been born. Somewhere north of 90% of children with Down's Syndrome are aborted. So, when you look at people like the Palins, who are a successful, political family but one of their kids has an unplanned pregnancy and doesn't have an abortion, or Sarah has a child with Down's Syndrome and doesn't have an abortion, you're going to find a lot of people who--despite their claims of "choice"--think those are times when you ought to abort. For all sorts of reasons. "Bristol can't possibly be responsible enough to be a good mother," or "It's wrong to allow a child with Down's Syndrome to live because their life will just be full of suffering," and a lot of other, awful, disempowering things like that. And there's those who just can't stand it when pro-life people actually stick to their principles in the hard cases, too. So when they look at those children, they don't see the people that they are, they see the mistakes (according to them) their mothers made. And that makes Trig an acceptable target. He wasn't supposed to live this long in the first place, so he doesn't really count.

Makes sense.

It's also only recently that I have learned that pro-abortion people get upset when you call them that, and that they insist on being called "pro-choice" as you've described here. That one is really bizarre, since as you have illustrated, anyone who CHOOSES to keep their child in circumstances like the Palin family experienced are met with the hatred we all saw. So what "choice" are they talking about? For that side, there's only one choice that's acceptable to them.

Pro-choice only means "our choice," which means abortion. It's pretty screwed up, isn't it?

From: [identity profile] mosinging1986.livejournal.com
I always assumed that pro-abortion and pro-choice were interchangeable terms - not used by the pro-life side toward them, but that they used to identify themselves! It's only been fairly recently that I learned this is not so, and that many on that side are offended at being called pro-abortion.

It's so hard to keep track of things like this. I need a rule book or something!

See, this...argh. If abortion isn't bad, then why don't the people supporting it want to be called "pro-abortion?" And if it is bad, why are they supporting it? Still, on the plus side, when even the movement defending something doesn't like being directly associated with it, you know that thing's in trouble.

I tend to skirt this issue by using the term "abortion apologist." Aside from added alliterative appeal, it's polite but it negates the use of euphemisms. ...Well, unless I'm irritated, in which case it's "pro-abortion" all the way whether they like it or not. Or, if I'm really pissed off, "anti-life."

I know, right? It's all so confusing.

Hm, abortion apologist. I think I may try using that in conversations. Thanks!

Yeah, imagine that.

Good points from her. It's pathetic.

A conservative FB friend posted this and of course everyone's like, "But he's a Republican and you Republicans hate women. Also, no one condemned him!" Um, okay. (The FB friend is a woman and active in local politics.)

I hope very much that she writes this herself instead of a ghostwriter. Because her snipe at Maher's smaller fanbase by calling it a "professional failure" is just brilliant. And completely hilarious.
