I've thought about this for a bit, and yeah, I'm going to go here, if only briefly. People think it's okay to say that stuff about Trig because he is an innocent child...who isn't supposed to have been born. Somewhere north of 90% of children with Down's Syndrome are aborted. So, when you look at people like the Palins, who are a successful, political family but one of their kids has an unplanned pregnancy and doesn't have an abortion, or Sarah has a child with Down's Syndrome and doesn't have an abortion, you're going to find a lot of people who--despite their claims of "choice"--think those are times when you ought to abort. For all sorts of reasons. "Bristol can't possibly be responsible enough to be a good mother," or "It's wrong to allow a child with Down's Syndrome to live because their life will just be full of suffering," and a lot of other, awful, disempowering things like that. And there's those who just can't stand it when pro-life people actually stick to their principles in the hard cases, too. So when they look at those children, they don't see the people that they are, they see the mistakes (according to them) their mothers made. And that makes Trig an acceptable target. He wasn't supposed to live this long in the first place, so he doesn't really count.
