Ian Somerhalder, star of Lost and the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries, has vehemently called out the Hollywood eco-elite and the President for their shameful deafening silence regarding the Gulf Coast oil spill. The longer segment was shown tonight on E! News.

Somerhalder is a Louisiana native and has spent the last month or so (with a break for a press tour in Europe) in Louisiana, helping local human societies to clean off and house affected wildlife, including the endangered brown pelican, as well as seagulls, dolphins and turtles. For the last few days, he has been living out of his car (really!) on Grand Isle, because the hotels are overflowing with [non-famous] volunteers. Grand Isle is a small island on the tip of Louisiana whose economy is almost entirely based on tourism, fishing, and oil industries, aka they have no economy left.

Today, Somerhalder invited his friend from E! News, Kristin Dos Santos and her crew to visit him in the Gulf to raise awareness about the area, and he is talking to Larry King to attempt to organize a telethon to raise money for the victims of the spill from the area, which he says is linked directly to the destruction of the local ecosystem. He is reporting that oil has started to wash up on the shores of Alabama now as well, ack.

Over on Twitter, Somerhalder is now railing against Obama and suggesting the President may be a psychopath who is enjoying the attention he's getting from the disaster. He's also criticized his fellow Hollywood actors and musicians for being utterly paralytic in its response to the disaster.

Somerhalder previously endorsed Obama in 2008 on his blog.

John Podhoretz's New York Post column spotlights/criticizes President Obama's apparent penchant to give the Deepwater Horizon disaster a moral dimension. It is a good counter to Obama's 9/11 comparison over the past weekend, so consider it as a palate cleanser. Special thanks to Michael Medved, as he referred to the piece in his yesterday radio show.

By way of introduction, Celebration V is a Star Wars convention set for August in Orlando. Reposted from my LJ page.

I'd been looking forward to possibly catching George Lucas at Celebration V, what with the otherwise ho-hum programming I've seen so far until they announced that "The Daily Show" star Jon Stewart would be doing the interview.

Oh. NO.

I know that Stewart brings SW up a lot on his show, he's spoken to Lucas a few times, and that Lucas is obviously comfortable with Stewart. That's all fine and good. But the thing is, Stewart is a guy whose show and whose notoriety come from having a specific political perspective. Even though he's been tough on the president lately and can be independent in his opinions, he's a very partisan guy. And I'm not confident he will not bring his political opinions or start bashing conservatives during his appearance at the convention.

Look, it's a lot of trouble for me to go to these things for many reasons. I'm not going to sit there, get insulted, called a racist or a teabagger, or sit through a battery of lame Sarah Palin jokes after I paid thousands of dollars, burned away vacation time at work, and turned down other trips to go to this thing, which I was reluctant to attend anyway. I don't want Stewart dumped from the program but I'll just have to skip his presentation. Not that it would ever happen but I can only imagine how liberal SW fans would feel if Glenn Beck (also a SW fan), Rush Limbaugh, or even Bill O'Reilly were invited to interview Lucas.

Well, we've had some interesting conservative news. Now for some fangirling!

I don't know who else is a Narnia fan, but here's the trailer for the Voyage of the Dawn Treader film, coming December!

This sounds better than some of the hotels I stay at. I want to check in! I'm paying for it, after all. Huge WTF from me on this one.

This ties in to the report the other day about U.S. government has officially designated a section of Arizona along the Mexico border a "no man's land" due to uncontrolled illegal immigration and drug cartel activity. And this isn't some thin strip along the border: its 3500 acres. The Sheriff of Pinal County, Paul Babeu (who will be the next Sheriff Joe, I can see it) bluntly stated "I don't control portions of [Pinal County]" due to the violence. This is actually in Pima County, but Sheriff Babeu has said this extends into his county, which is larger than the state of Connecticut. So it is a lawless "no man's land" where you may enter at your own risk. Keep in mind that most of Central/Southern Arizona is desert waste and that the Border Patrol is spread very thinly along the border itself which leaves the interior to be patrolled by local law enforcement. A deputy who was patrolling alone (this is routine...there just aren't enough men) was recently ambushed and shot in the desert (he lived, thankfully). Also, two men were recently found murdered in this "no man's land" after they called for help on their cellphones. I can't imagine going into a national park, a place intended for safe recreation, under these conditions--at least, not without coming fully armed and even then the smugglers have better guns than we do so it wouldn't matter.

Money quote:
Gilbert Meehl believes the signs are a good idea especially for those who aren't familiar with the area. He says, "those who pull off the road from another state to take their picture with a cactus and they travel down one of these roads, there's no telling what they can run into."

So, the illegals that are caught here (and elsewhere) get sent to Club Med while Americans living along the border have to worry about their safety because the government would rather entertain the illegals than protect the border from them.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention: there is a website set up by Gov. Brewer to collect donations for the defense fund for SB1070 since its now official that Obama is going to sue us: http://www.keepazsafe.com/  She delivered an ultimatum to Obama regarding finishing the fence/adding troops on the border and the deadline expired today. I am very interested to see what she does about it.

Edit: No comment on that so far, but here is what she said about HRC outing Obama's plan to sue Arizona:
"To learn of this lawsuit through an Ecuadorean interview with the secretary of state is just outrageous," she said. "If our own government intends to sue our state to prevent illegal immigration enforcement, the least it can do is inform us before it informs the citizens of another nation."

Edit: I guess the video isn't there anymore. Here is a link to the story.

I don't know how many of you read The People's Cube (Correct Opinions for Progressive Liberals!), but they recently put up a picspam from a large protest against the mosque being built adjacent to Ground Zero:

There were lots of immigrants like these men (including a large group of Russian immigrants), who protested. Its well worth a look. [link]
Just an off observation:  according to the signs above, it seems Israel has suffered the least violence from radical Islamists since 9/11. I wonder why that is?

Yesterday I posted about how Ian Somerhalder, star of the CW hit series The Vampire Diaries, has been trying to mobilize the Hollywood machine to raise money for the victims of the Gulf oil spill crisis.

Just thought y'all would like to know that today, thanks in part to conversations the 2 of them had over the weekend, Larry King has announced that he and Ryan Seacrest, along with Somerhalder, Harry Connick, Jr. and a bunch of other Hollywood people, are (FINALLY) having a two-hour telethon on CNN to help rebuild the Gulf Coast. The telethon, much like the one that raised millions for Haiti, will air Monday, June 21 from 5PM to 7PM, EST.

All proceeds will go to either the United Way, the Nature Conservancy or the National Wildlife Fund (you get to pick where your money goes).

Pretty awesome! And also about damn time. But mostly awesome.
