This sounds better than some of the hotels I stay at. I want to check in! I'm paying for it, after all. Huge WTF from me on this one.
This ties in to the report the other day about U.S. government has officially designated a section of Arizona along the Mexico border a "no man's land" due to uncontrolled illegal immigration and drug cartel activity. And this isn't some thin strip along the border: its 3500 acres. The Sheriff of Pinal County, Paul Babeu (who will be the next Sheriff Joe, I can see it) bluntly stated "I don't control portions of [Pinal County]" due to the violence. This is actually in Pima County, but Sheriff Babeu has said this extends into his county, which is larger than the state of Connecticut. So it is a lawless "no man's land" where you may enter at your own risk. Keep in mind that most of Central/Southern Arizona is desert waste and that the Border Patrol is spread very thinly along the border itself which leaves the interior to be patrolled by local law enforcement. A deputy who was patrolling alone (this is routine...there just aren't enough men) was recently ambushed and shot in the desert (he lived, thankfully). Also, two men were recently found murdered in this "no man's land" after they called for help on their cellphones. I can't imagine going into a national park, a place intended for safe recreation, under these conditions--at least, not without coming fully armed and even then the smugglers have better guns than we do so it wouldn't matter.
Money quote:
So, the illegals that are caught here (and elsewhere) get sent to Club Med while Americans living along the border have to worry about their safety because the government would rather entertain the illegals than protect the border from them.
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention: there is a website set up by Gov. Brewer to collect donations for the defense fund for SB1070 since its now official that Obama is going to sue us: http://www.keepazsafe.com/ She delivered an ultimatum to Obama regarding finishing the fence/adding troops on the border and the deadline expired today. I am very interested to see what she does about it.
Edit: No comment on that so far, but here is what she said about HRC outing Obama's plan to sue Arizona:

Gilbert Meehl believes the signs are a good idea especially for those who aren't familiar with the area. He says, "those who pull off the road from another state to take their picture with a cactus and they travel down one of these roads, there's no telling what they can run into."

"To learn of this lawsuit through an Ecuadorean interview with the secretary of state is just outrageous," she said. "If our own government intends to sue our state to prevent illegal immigration enforcement, the least it can do is inform us before it informs the citizens of another nation."

Date: 2010-06-18 05:13 am (UTC)The issue is that, while they are imprisoned for breaking the laws of this country, they are treated like its a Holiday Inn vacation and this comes at our expense. These are detention facilities, not hotels.
