I have a desk calendar at work that has a theme of bizarre laws, crimes, and judicial rulings. Usually its stupud, sometimes its just not funny, and ocassionally its just disturbing. One time its been coincidentally relevent. I meant to post this yesterday but I ran out of time. For August 24th the paper read:

"England has no death penalty, but a judge in London nonetheless sentenced a ten-year-old girl to death. How? He refused to order Britain's National Health Service to give the child a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy that might have suppressed her leukemia. The judge ruled the child was probably going to die anyway, so why waste the time and money on the therapy?"

The way this is phrased is interesting, as I didn't know that England officially does not exercise capital punishment, but indirectly executes its citizens by denying them live-saving healthcare. Also, I didn't know that judges could get involved...I don't want anyone besides myself and my doctor making my healthcare decisions. A judge with zero medical knowledge couldn't possibly determing what is best for me and mine!

Hmm....I wonder if liberals would declare a calendar full of miscellaneous facts "biased?"

Yeah, Britain has no guns either so everybody just stabs each other.

It's energy-efficient!

How so? I think it takes more energy to stab some one. It's quite physical, in fact. Shooting only takes it out of my thumb and trigger finger, (double action) and maybe some arm strength to lift that 13 oz revolver.

I'd like to know more about the case before taking this phrasing entirely seriously.

If that little girl was a Libyan terrorist who blew up a jet liner and killed 300 people, she would have been shown more compassion from that judge.

Huh. What would you call a judge deciding such a thing. Maybe... a death panel?

This reminds me. I was watching some TLC show about the gigantic baby a while back. The baby ate regularly but grew at an amazing rate. Well, they happened to be in England and there was a passing comment about talking to their, I don't remember exactly what the title was but basically the social service worker to get permission before they could take the baby to the hospital and find out what was going on.

The woman talked about being grilled by the worker about how much she was feeding him and whatnot. The mom is trying to be responsible and find out what is going wrong and can't until they decide if she's a good mother.

Luckily, it was genetic and didn't seem to be harmful. But could you imagine if it had been something serious?

Yeah, Do. Not. Want.
