The first and second amendments are really just there to defend the tenth - one verbally, the other more assertively.

There's a reason they put it as the last amendment in the bill of rights. It functions kind of like a corner stone and perfectly sums up the entire gist of the constitution.

I remember learning in my history class that a few states refused to join the United States until the first ten amendments were created.
