According to the latest available data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 35.920 million uninsured U.S. citizens and 9.737 million uninsured foreign nationals residing in the United States. Counting the uninsured foreign nationals, that makes a total of 45.657 millionor "nearly 46 million"-- uninsured people in the United States. But you cannot say, as President Obama has, that there are "nearly 46 million Americans who don't have health insurance coverage" or that "46 million of our fellow citizens have no coverage" unless you count 9.737 million foreign nationals as "Americans" and "fellow citizens." White House Open To Non-Profit Health Care Co-ops - August 17, 2009
Under a proposal by Sen. Kent Conrad, D-ND, consumer-owned nonprofit cooperatives would sell insurance in competition with private industry, not unlike the way electric and agriculture co-ops operate. With $3 billion to $4 billion in initial support from the government, the co-ops would operate under a national structure with state affiliates, but independent of the government. They would be required to maintain the type of financial reserves that private companies are required to keep in case of unexpectedly high claims. AP

Date: 2009-08-20 07:23 am (UTC)I have misgivings about nonprofit co-ops. The government would still bail them out if needed (ala Fannie Mae). It looks like they are trying put forth proposals that look good on paper in order to get something done.

Date: 2009-08-20 12:15 pm (UTC)I also think the co-ops are just the camel's nose in the tent. They can always change them later.

Date: 2009-08-20 02:36 pm (UTC)Speaking as someone who is former ex-Navy, that almost makes Obama's point for him. Part of the reason I went back is that Navy care beats the VA.
Even if I do have to pay out-of-pocket for orthotics (thanks, TRICARE).
