http://thememegeneration.tumblr.com/post/162807912/quaranto-this-morning-i-was-awoken-by-my-alarm was the starting point...

This morning I was awoken by cell phone's alarm clock, a switch I made because I was tired of worrying what would happen if the alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy, went out. In some corner of my mind, I still wonder why we have government controlled monopolies, and I hope that does not become a way of life. I then took a shower in the water provided by the municipal water utility, and I think about how old the pipes are that bring the water to me and how the city has not repaired or replaced them in many years. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the local meteorologist felt like the weather would be, using information from satellites launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (who by federal law are the only people that can launch them). I watch this while eating my breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. I miss the taste of fresh food, however the local farms near me has been run out of business by the DoA's mandate to get big or get out. It seems the subsidies provided to farmers tend to go to the big companies and not to the small guy. There is a better drug for my medical conditions in Canada and Europe, but because that manufacture has not paid enough in bribes and/or extensive studies have been done to satisfy the FDA.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress, and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation (wondering when the last time they had been inspected) possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency (and have fond dreams of drilling in ANWAR), using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank.

I drop the kids off at the private school where they are encouraged to live up to their academic potential. I briefly consider homeschooling them again, but due to the taxes my husband and I pay, I must continue to work. I pass by a bank that was considered too big to fail and was taken over by the federal government, and wonder when the survival of the fittest stopped applying to the really big companies. I drive a foreign car because it is a better car, period. My husband and I bought me a new car with his old paid for clunker because thanks to the the government's interference, we knew that we could not get parts for much longer for the old car. I guess the Korean car makers are very happy with the program now.

Today is payday, and I look at how much of my paycheck has gone towards city, state, and federal taxes and shake my head. My husband received a small raise this year, but due to the taxes we pay, we won't see a dime of it. I wonder again if I'll ever see a dime I pay into medicare, medicaid or SSI.

After work, I drive my NHTSA bar back home on DOT roads, to a house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and Fire Marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department. I did stop by the local volunteer fire department to drop off some supplies for the victims of the fire two blocks over, which had been built to codes and inspected prior to purchase. Without the local volunteers, we would be in a lot of trouble.

I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post to various groups about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the things the government do well are limited and their failures are numerous, and that the VA hospitals, which are government run are not in great condition. I point out we are in a recession and cannot afford to go into any more debt. When I mention these facts, the liberals who claim to embrace diversity tell me to head back to Fox News. I've come to realize that I live in a different reality from them.

I agree with your message entirely.

People really don't understand what a ticking time bomb our old and worn out water and sewer lines are. The politicians never want to do anything about them because, "they are underground and the voters don't see them."

But we certainly feel their effects when they burst.

Believe me I know. I work in the plumbing supply business. I can remember a night two winters ago when a water line burst in the middle of the night near our local public housing project. He was a poor guy in a ditch six feet deep, standing in mud, trying to fix the leak. The guy on the backhoe suffered frostbite. At least I had a fairly warm truck to sit in.

Do you think the people in the housing authority apartments appreciated what was done for them. HELL NO!!!!! They all bitched about not having very good water pressure the next morning. I was so mad.
