Anyone else watching the movie Dave on Lifetime (hey, don't judge) right now? Kevin Kline (er, Dave) just cut a BUNCH of congressional pork, and it was sublime. What a rush! :D If only real life were like the movies... in this one instance, anyway.

I have that movie on either VHS or DVD. It is a pure awesome movie. That is what happens when a real American gets into office! Did you know Dave is also a remake of a play by George M. Cohan? Once my parents and I watched Yankee Doodle Dandy, and then we absolutely had to watch Dave afterwards.

If I were President (wishful thinking, I know, but hey, it could happen), Dave would totally be my Presidential template. I hate it that in Presidential Hollywood, the "good" ones are usually Democrats (The American President, The West Wing, etc.), but I can't tell what Dave is. He's just a good guy.

(The Gwen DeMarco icon is in honor of Sigourney Weaver's great job as Ellen. Love the singing scene.)

I had been interested in watching The American President, but my speech teacher last year had students analyze speeches from different movies. She held up a speech from The American President, and that absolutely convinced me against the movie. In fact, my analysis was a bit of a rant.

He was defending the ACLU.

I forget who he mentioned, and I did not watch the movie. I just read the speech.

I remember one time I was at a get-together with some girlfriends, and "The American President" was on TV, and the other girls were getting all swoony and gushy over the "romance" of his speech, and I just stood there and denounced him as a liberal squish. You should have seen the confused looks I got. :-) Wish you'd been there to rant with me, arkadelos.

That is a part of the problem with liberals. They sound beautiful, but their beauty is superficial.

Yeah, the movie's not that accurate, what with Bob Alexander, Bill's Chief of Staff, hoping to succeed to the Presidency after Bill died and they framed Nance. The Speaker of the House would be President according to the 25th Amendment.

And I agree with you about why the USA in the movie is so rosy. If it weren't, it'd be just like real life, and who the heck wants to pay $8 (or more) to see real life when it's right out the window?

I know! That's why I love my quirky, fantastical, quasi-sci-fi shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and The Middleman. Both paint a pretty rosy picture of the world, even though the characters are in some pretty crazy circumstances. Sure you may be trapped in space by mad scientists and forced to watch the worst images ever set to celluloid, or you're the last line of defense between another sunny day and the impending trout-craving zombie armageddon, but that doesn't mean you have to be emo about it!

I just put out my required reading/viewing list for my new political party "staff" and the movie Dave was #3 on the list.

I've been sick of politics in general so I invented a new Party a while back. A few friends (a.k.a. my Staff) and I have been working on it on and off. The public web site is not up yet but I've already bought the domain JaneForPresident.com (http://www.janeforpresident.com), it's just redirecting to my old "I broke the site" page. However that page does have a small button with the Party logo on it.

Oh, to have a president like that.

.. but if I could make some movies RL, I'd probably choose LOTR, Harry Potter, and Star Trek. All at once. And watch what happens.
