I had an epiphany, lately, on a double standard about Obama and Palin.

One of Gov. Palin's strongest points in the VP debate was her stressing of fiscal responsibility. She proved it, as she sold the private jet and decided not to take her pay raise, post-election (she said she didn't earn the money, since she was busy with the campaign). If you want to argue the RNC clothes wankery, fine, but she made her point.*

Meanwhile, Obama, in his press conference yesterday, is stressing on fiscal responsibility. That's good, except, well, he apparently has an aversion to paying his bills.

Interesting double standard, yes?

*I heard something about her not paying taxes. I don't know the full story, so could someone fill me in? As HT.com jabbed, "it makes her qualified to be in Obama's cabinet."

I posted this news story in [livejournal.com profile] sarahpalin2012 the other day.

Palin to Pay Taxes on Per Diem Income
(http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/02/19/palin-pay-taxes-diem-income/)

And it's not a case of her not paying her taxes, however I think they were trying to spin the story to make it have some controversy.

Basically what happened is this, when they were vetting her for VP and they go through and look at tax history and all that stuff some questions came up about whether or not the per deims she receives from living in her own house etc. are considered "income". The Governor herself asked that it be looked into, state policy was reviewed (because apparently no one was sure) and it was determined that it should be considered income and she's going to pay it.

End of story.

Here's an excerpt from a different story (http://www.adn.com/palin/story/693695.html) ...

"Last fall we raised questions about longstanding practices within the Department of Administration regarding tax treatment of per diem payments," Kreitzer wrote in an exchange of e-mails over the past few days with the Daily News.

"At the Governor's request, we reviewed the situation to determine whether we were in full compliance with the pertinent Internal Revenue Service regulations," Kreitzer wrote. "As a result of this review, we determined that per diem needs to be treated as income, requiring a revision of W-2 forms for any affected employees."

Oh, and another thing to keep in mind is that this is all about the current tax year and I'm guessing part of the last so it's not really "back taxes".

Besides, voluntarily investigating yourself, discovering that you'd misunderstood IRS rules (like that never happens :-) and then paying what you owe??

Gosh, the average American taxpayer would just despise someone like that!

It takes a pretty hardened political activist not to have figured that out--so it took the tanning bed media a few tries...

Have you ever priced bespoke suits for men? That Obama & McCain got a pass on what their wardrobes cost, and Palin and her family were subjected to snide tsk-tsking just goes to prove that American feminism--on the so-called feminists side--is dead.
