Date: 2009-02-12 09:01 pm (UTC)That said, the man crush Lucas has on Obama is just weird even for a guy who has clearly lived in Marin County for too long. It makes me wonder if there isn't some part of Lucas who's like Anakin, looking for a guy to believe in and finds it in the wrong person. This is embarrassing enough but I don't expect everyone whose work I enjoy or admire to agree with me either.
What's problematic is how this opens up the potential for Lucas to abuse the franchise to promote Obama and his ideas. For a long time, they've been very careful not to be obvious about taking sides. The end result is a film series that is timeless and universal in its appeal. But twist it into a soapbox for leftist ideas, it's no longer timeless or universal. In 20 years, it's another Battleship Potemkin or worse, Triumph of the Will. And that would be a real shame.
