I thought this would be a fun exercise as clearly there are people on my friend's list who have different opinions on different issues in the political world. Taking a cue from http://www.ontheissues.org/, take five or more of these issues and list your opinions:
Foreign Policy
Homeland Security
War & Peace
Free Trade
Immigration
Energy & Oil
Gun Control
Crime
Drugs
Civil Rights
Jobs
Environment
Budget & Economy
Government Reform
Tax Reform
Social Security
Welfare & Poverty
Technology
Education
Health Care
Abortion
Families & Children
Corporations
Principles & Values
I support every attempt to strengthen the 10th admendment.
Immigration:
We must tighten our borders to prevent illegal immigrants easy access to this country. We need to increase our quotas to allow more people to come in legally.
We need to allow employers to hire people perform jobs that they find it difficult to fill. However, employers must first demonstrate that A- there is a labor shortage in their specific labor market by attempting to recruite US residents and citizens using a minimum of three media sources for a period of 3 months. B- employers will be required to contact DFACs, Vocational Rehabilitation agencies, and correction agencies to fill these openings, C- Employers will be responsible for the recruitment of noncitizens only in their home countries and will bare the resposability of providing transportation to and from the nation of residence. If an noncitizen does not return freely, then the employer is required to inform law inforcement.
Energy and Oil
America needs to become more self-sufficiant in how they obtain oil, gas, and other energy resources. To achieve this goal, a taffic of 15% should be placed on oil and other energy products not obtained in this country. These funds will be spent on increasing energy independance.
Domestic Issues:
Gun Control
Every US citizen has the right to obtain fire arms suitable for self-defence and hunting. Gross stupidity or criminal actions will remove this right. Mental health issues may affect this right as well. Nature of weapons can be left open to debate.
Crime
The standard for capital punishment convictions must be very high.
Would support pay raises for cops to bring their salary to the medium wage of the community that they live in.
Drugs
I would support the legalization of all drugs because of my time working in the prision system. This support will only be given if an extremely high tax rate was placed on drugs.
Civil Rights
Affirmitive Action is an expression of racism. However, due to the quite racism of many, something is needed. Therefore, I would support allowing all those who pass a national test and maintain grades of a 2.5 or better 12 semesters of the pell grant to obtain a higher education be it at a college or a tech school. Provide grants to for small businesses. Fund students on a mixture of per student and income raised in the school district so that innercity schools aren't so SOL on funding. Promote actions that allow people of all races to excel. To me, the issues boils down to classism- people raise their children to be equals or rise above their social status.
People who do not obtain the score to benefit from college education are allowed to repeat the testing three times a year thoughout their life span. Job training in the terms of tech school or on the job training can be offered as well.
Environment:
I believe that there is a difference in opinion on global warming, however, the earth is a gift from God that we are trashing. Therefore, I would favor policies that attempt to create substanability. I favor the encouragement of organic foods, small farms, and clean water.
Budget & Economy:
Sadly, in order to preserve this great nation, we need to cut by 10-20% all social services until such time as the debt is repaid.
Tax Reform
I support the Fair Tax as a way to limit governmental power and to stimulate the economy. Failing this, I support a flat tax.
Welfare & Poverty
Welfare has only increased the numbers who need it. I support a more aggressive screening of all people on welfare for disability and drug dependance. Those with disabilities will be referred to vocational rehabilitation to attempt to find a job. Those with drug dependance/addiction will be offered counseling. All people on welfare will be offered job training/If after three years, a person is not off of welfare, their benefits will be decreased by 50% for each year that they remain on welfare, assuming that the job rate in their community is below 6%. If it is above 6%, then the cut will be 25% and relocation services can be discussed.
Education
I do not support no child left behind nor any other system that enforces teaching to the test. I support a system where in the money falls the child to whatever form of education that the parents deems best for their child. I support transportation assistance to help a child attend a successful school.
Health Care
Government can provide assistance in purchasing insurance and mandate that all citizens become insured.
Abortion
I support non-embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research from the existing lines may continue though. More funding for adult stem-cell research. Allow states to have full say in abortion as it is not the federal government's business as long as reasonable standards for endangering the health of the mother are observed. (I know a woman who nearly died of toxima in the 50s in her 15th week of pregancy. It took 3 hours to find 7 ob/gyns to sign that an abortion was required to save the life of the mother.)
Families & Children
School systems must report all times that a student is not in class as can be done in some states with students undergoing substance abuse counseling and abortion. Parents have the rights to make all medical decision for their children unless that child is able to utlize the judicial system.
Principles & Values
America has always been a multicultural country and this needs to be honored. While Christianity is the majority religion, they must show that they accept other people's right to their religions. However, I don't believe it is possible to seperate religion from government as ethics and religion are closely aligned, and goverment attempts to enforce a standard of ethics through its laws.
