I'm starting to dislike my friends' politics even more. It's really hard to be the only Republican in a group of Dems.
Just tonight, I was out with my two girl friends and one of them, the more political one (who happens to be a hop, skip and a jump away from being a card-carrying socialist), asked me if I was going to hole up in my room and cry on Tuesday. Please. I have more dignity than that. I would like to be away from all the Kool-Aid drinkers out there, however, so I might just see about holing up in the woods for the day.
We got to talking about why I don't like Obama (He's smarmy, he's inconsistent, no experience, etc) and they don't let me get a word in edge-wise, and start throwing my words back in my face, but substituting McCain or Bush for Obama.
I realize that Bush might have been a disappointment, but honestly, he DID NOT know 9/11 was going to happen. Mention that bin Laden was practically handed to Clinton on a silver platter and I get, "Well, he wasn't a threat back then." Neither was Hitler during the first world war. (Why didn't I come up with that retort on the spot?! Ack!)
Frankly, I want this whole thing to be over. I was relieved when the election was over, but now all I want is people to calm down about their 'Savior' and for Obama to F up royally (although, he'll probably get a "better luck next time, Champ."), and to prove that he's just a man and not their Messiah.
I'm honestly afraid for our country. I'm afraid what it will mean to be a Republican in our 'Changed' society. People see that we're in a depression, but how quickly they forget that America has been very prosperous the last seven years.
I don't think you can blame everything on the President. I think a lot of America's problems have to do with the American people as a whole, and the fact that people were so decidedly against Bush show what a hateful world we live in. Everyone looks to Kennedy's 'Camelot' as the good ol' days and remembers his speech, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what YOU can do for your Country!" We've all seen the clips on the news of those nutjobs saying, "Now I'll never have to pay my house payment/Credit Debt/Student Loan/Car payment again!" They're not asking what they can do for their country. They want to know how much they can suck from the country. I wasn't around in the 60s when Kennedy was president, and I realize that he was a Democrat, but that famous line from his speech sits with me as I realize that people don't believe it anymore, and Obama doesn't believe it at all, otherwise he wouldn't have made those promises.
People are so blind to his charm that they don't see the snake lying underneath. If he had any experience whatsoever, he wouldn't have made so many promises that he can't keep. He's already scaling back because of the recession, and he hasn't even been sworn in.
This country is becoming a joke. Our president takes on lead articles in fan magazines. There are posters of him you can buy at Walmart. Entire stores are devoted to selling T-Shirts and Hats with his likeness on them. It's a freaking circus!
I'm sorry for the rant. I can't post this sort of thing on my own blog. I know too many Kool-Aid drinkers. Although I don't know why they'd bother to read it. They don't listen to my opinions anyway.
Pray for our country. The world is already through with taking us seriously.

I so understand where you're coming from. But I finally got sick and tired of my liberal friends and we no longer see each other anymore. (Could be because after I finally broke down and told them my opinion, they hacked into my e-mails and made my online life a living hell.) Be strong. I give the country 2 years before we implode from the amount of smugness going around here. People here in Cali loooooove to tell others they voted for Obama, cause it makes them feel good. But I just keep flashing back to that South Park episode with the hybrid cars and the smug storm...

It's really weird, but that Kennedy quote... it reminds me of conservatism and the republican party today. The fact that liberals used to believe in it but don't believe in it anymore shows just how far our country has changed since then...

Kennedy wasn't a liberal, though. The Democrat Party was different back then, certainly, but liberals were pretty much the same as they are now.

Great rant! I think you just expressed everything I have been feeling about our "star" President. When you have pictures of your kids first day of school in People magazine, I just shake my head and wonder when people will wake up and see that we didn't elect a President, we elected a celebrity!

Amen, girl. I try not to think about where we're heading, or my stomach does somersaults. Everybody's gotten bitchier everywhere and it hasn't magically improved now that the "savior" has been elected, either. I'm so thankful my circle is either conservatives or Dems who don't make make a big deal about it, as there's no way I try to talk about what I believe in on fan sites. Been patted on the head by enough Brits that treat me (and others) like the dumb American, thanks! bleh.

This country is already apathetic and isolationist.....I hope there IS hope in 2010 and 2012.

Wow, I've been thinking the same things.

And it bothers me how Liberals don't listen to anything we Conservatives say. And they say we're ignorant and close-minded! HA!

Exactly.
Or when they do, they don't listen. it goes in one ear and out the other.

Haha, so true.

And I agree completely.

Next time it comes up about Bin Laden and Clinton. Yes, he WAS a threat then. The FIRST attack on the World Trade Center during the Clinton administration was linked to Bin Laden.

They say that a squeaky wheel gets the most grease, and the moonbats have been squeaking up a storm for years. I think it's time they got a taste of their own medicine.

Really, all I can say is "Amen sister!" I hate how our country just goes and blames EVERYTHING on the President who is, in reality, one man. One versus 300 million...which group do you think has the bigger impact? P:

My head is hurting from how much hype is going into Tuesday, and everytime I see an article on my Yahoo news ticker about the Obamadise being sold or his vacation or what school his kids go to, I want to scream.

Luckily, my two closest online friends side with me, so we can rant to one another. A few kids I eat lunch with also side with me - what's funny is that it's so shocking to learn some other teenager is a conservative that we give each other high-fives.

You brought up some points I'm going to jot down - particularly the Bin Laden/Hitler line. Excellent!

I understand how you feel. I posted a sort of "Thank you" to President Bush and made disabled comments, and people were firing back with all sorts of things about how horrible he was and how inflammatory my post was to mention his name without allowing them to be able to argue about it.

I feel for you, but hang in there. I know it sort of seems like the world is ending, but we made it through four years of Jimmy Carter.

I may eat my words later on, but I think Obama's already showing himself to be more concerned with campaigning for 2012 and with molding his legacy (even this early, yes) and probably won't give his liberal supporters a whole lot on their wishlist. Simply because it'd harm his chances to run again in 2012 because, whether he likes it or not, most Americans aren't in lockstep with the far left. Things might be a bit different if he's re-elected in 2012 (though that's too far into the future to worry about at the moment), but I still think Obama's far too self-interested to risk harm to his legacy by veering too far from the center.

That isn't to say that I'm not worried about him eventually appointing judges as liberal as Ruth Bader Ginsberg when Justice Stevens retires--I am. But there is little that we can do about that.

A side note: I sometimes wonder what would have happened had Kennedy not been assassinated. Certainly, it's a huge "what if," but I imagine that he would not have as huge a legion of fanboys/girls headed up by Chris "Tingles" Matthews and Arthur Schlesinger as he has. I suppose Kennedy would have still been worshipped by some, but there probably could've been more honest discussion about his presidency and how lackluster it really was.

JFK was a cult of personality president, his life glamorized from the moment he decided to run for office. He was fairly young, handsome, and rich. He had a lovely fashion-plate wife. He had cute kids. The working class folks liked him in spite of it all, just as they once adored the wealthy FDR. And of course, he was the first and only Catholic president. With Peter Lawford for a brother-in-law and the showbiz access that bought, some Hollywood glitter rubbed off on him as well. And that was before people knew about the Marilyn Monroe thing! As with the popular and glamourous Princess Diana, an early violent death seals the mythology. "Camelot" was an invention of Arthur Schlesinger after Kennedy's death, in cooperation with Jacqueline Kennedy Not-Yet-Onassis.

The mystique of the JFK years still has a powerful hold over liberals. It is true that Kennedy was no part of the New Left that now dominates the Democratic Party, but it doesn't seem to matter. There was not a lot of lingering accomplishment except kicking off space exploration, but that doesn't seem to matter either. Liberals are convinced it was the greatest three years in American history that could have been something more had it not been for a myriad of conspiracies that ended Kennedy's life.

I understand, but I still think that if his death had not been so sudden, there would be more opportunity within academia to examine Kennedy more honestly. FDR is still worshipped in many circles of academia, but the adulation has worn away enough to allow some openminded analysis of his presidency. But I suppose any similar treatment of JFK won't occur for some time--possibly until the Baby Boomers die out. But there will be historians out there (provided that things don't get even more postmodern), who'll want to challenge the prevaling opinions, particularly as the myth of Camelot fades further into the past.

Had JFK lived on to ripe old age, the hero worship may not have been so strong, though he would have still been the first Catholic president, and I should say that that's probably a good enough reason for some people to idolize him. It's a big hypothetical load of bull plop, though, because we'll never know.

It is funny, however, that leftists idolize Kennedy while ignoring that his politics were different from their own. Such is the mythology that surrounds him.
