And in Mexico/U.S. relations news...
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gorden is honored with an award from Mexico:
So. Mexico recognizes an amnesty/sanctuary-city advocate with an award while sending angry letters to the U.S. anytime we do anything to enforce our border. Were Phil Gordon up for reelection this would surely be a kiss of death because the immigration/border security issue has become so important to us of late, what with the terrible economy and 40,000 people in Mexico murdered as part of drug violence in the past five years. Mexico is fast-tracking itself to becoming a narco-state so doing everything possible to ingratiate itself with U.S. politicians seems to be a wise course of action for them.

Mexican representatives will give Gordon the Ohtli Award during an exclusive dinner that Gordon’s aide, Janey Pearl, said was paid for by the Mexican government.
“It’s a public facility but it’s not open to the public,” Pearl said of the event.
She did not provide more details about the rental agreement with the Mexican Consulate.
The Ohtli Award is the Mexican government’s highest honor for a civilian living outside of Mexico who helped “enhance the standard of living for Mexicans living abroad,” according to the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix.
The award usually is awarded to someone of Mexican or Latino descent, which Gordon is not.
Gordon “has been a leader in forging relationships to bolster economic ties between Mexico and Arizona and boost regional prosperity,” the Consulate’s office said in a statement. “This has led to empowerment of the Mexican and Mexican-American Communities in Arizona, often in the face of adversity.”
Last year, Gordon decried the new state immigration law, Senate Bill 1070, as unnecessarily divisive and likely to harm the economy. The law would have allowed law enforcement to stop anyone suspected of being in the country illegally and check their immigration status. A federal judge last year disabled much of it but it still is being fought in the courts.
Gordon, as well as City Manager David Cavazos, have traveled frequently to Mexico this past year to court a Mexican airline, Volaris, with the hope that it will begin offering direct Arizona-Mexico flights.
“Ohtli” is the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for “pathway.” The Ohtli medal features footprints to symbolize the pathway.
Earlier this year, the Mexican government gave the award to former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who also is a former ambassador to the United Nations.
