I am friends with many different folks from many walks of life across this country and recently my one friend, Dr. Samuel Conway [livejournal.com profile] unclekage posted the following in his Journal;

Fifteen-E

I took a trip this weekend out west to visit an old friend. Since I fly
fairly often, both for work and for conventions, I am frequently given a
complimentary upgrade to first class. Such was the case this weekend.

When
you're sitting in the first class cabin you get to see everyone else
who boards. One of my fellow passengers was a soldier in uniform. I
could tell by the look in his eyes that he hadn't had an easy time of it
so I asked him where he was sitting. "Fifteen-E," he said.

"Fifteen-E. If you don't mind I'd like to send a drink back for you."

He brightened. "Yes, Sir!" he said.

As
we took off I got to thinking about him and especially about his eyes.
Considering what our boys go through over there it wasn't hard to
imagine what gave him such a far-off look. Not quite the "thousand yard
stare" we hear so often about, but pretty close. Maybe seven hundred
yards.

In my seat One-D I could easily chat with the flight
attendants. "There's a soldier back in Fifteen-E" I said to the nearest
one. "Once the seat belt sign goes off I'd like to trade seats with
him."

She was very surprised and asked me if I was sure,
reminding me that Fifteen-E is a middle seat. "Sure I'm sure," I said.
"I just can't see fit to plop my flabby old butt in this seat just
because I happen to fly a lot while that young fellow puts his life on
the line every day and gets a packet of peanuts for it."

She went
back and got the soldier, who was quite dumbfounded and tried to thank
me as I got up. "Nah," I said. "You earned it more than I did. The
beer is free up here. Go to town."

I went back and sat in
Fifteen-E. All the people around kept telling me how nice I was. I
reminded them that "Support our Troops" is more than just a catchy
bumper sticker slogan. The flight attendants brought me a meal from
first class and kept refilling my glass from the premium wine selection
they had up there. I had a nice (if slightly slurred) chat with the
lady to my right about Furries.

Everybody wins.
