Here's something I thought y'all might find interesting.
President Obama was here in Phoenix yesterday and today promoting health care and pretending to give a whit about our vets (remember when he was considering making private insurance companies responsible for the medical care of injuries our servicemen received in the line of duty? Yeah, he really cares about them).
When he was here on Sunday a gun-rights group was protesting outside of the building where he was speaking. There were about a dozen of them and one of them was carrying a civilian-issue assault rifle (in addition to a pistol strapped to his hip) which he displayed in full-view. All of the people who were in this group kept their guns in full view because Arizona law is "open carry" and states that anyone can carry a gun as long as it is viewable on their person. So, no laws broken. The group even called the police ahead of time to inform them that the group would be there. [

The media has latched onto this story as another case of wacky, racist, rednecks threatening the President, now with
assault rifles. However, what
none of the stories I've found so far have mentioned is that this man with the assault rifle was black and well-dressed. The anti-redneck, if you will. Certainly he defies the media stereotype. The news stories leave this detail out because a) they don't want to walk into their own trap and be accused of "racism", and b) by omitting the facts they force the reader to fill in the blanks and thus continue the stereotype. This person doesn't fit into their little box and thus is not particularly useful to them. Also, the man said that he is very against healthcare like this because it steals from others. Sounds pretty conservative to me, so he's knocking
two stereotypes at once. Good for him. :D
In the end, the police didn't arrest anyone and they actually said they were concerned someone might attack
him so they basically formed a loose barrier around him. It was quite peaceful and, despite the presence of so many guns (both unconcealed and concealed, legal and illegal--don't you bet that there were people there NOT following the law and, lacking a concealed-carry permit, had their handgun stuffed into their waistband or pocket or something? I do, and those are the nuts you SHOULD worry about) nobody got hurt. The guns didn't suddenly develop minds of their own and shoot people. Because, as we always say, guns don't kill people--people kill people.
I finally found a picture of the guy:
