I'm a bit surprised that nobody is really talking about this. Russia has invaded Georgia, did so on the opening day of the Olympics, and the world seems barely to have batted an eye. I know that the G-7 (emphasis on 7) met, and I know President Bush gave a pretty strong speech condemning Russia (called their actions "brutal," I believe and he definitely looked pissed) that was, no surprise here, not carried by most of the news networks. Everyone is caught up in the Olympics and nobody seems to want to give this issue the proper attention. Obviously, this is exactly the reaction that Russia was hoping for -- I mean, who invades another country during the Olympics, right? Nobody expects the Spanish Inqu---the Russians! And due to the lukewarm reaction (where is the scathing criticism of the Russians for bombing civilian areas? Gee, we got tons when we went into civilian areas where insurgents were deliberately using the civilians as human shields, but the world seems silent in this case), I'm sure the Russians are feeling incredibly comfortable with their time-line for success. The expectation is that they could have the country under their control in less than 48 hours. And then what?

So, my question is, does anyone think that we'll engage in yet another military action? In this case, we'd be coming to the aid of a staunch U.S. ally in the region, as well as beating the snot out of an old enemy who obviously didn't learn its lesson the first time. On the other hand, we're already engaged in two other countries, not to mention the numerous police actions the U.N. has kindly made us responsible for, so I would have to wonder if we'd be stretched a bit thin by fighting in yet another region even if we could just sweep in and be done with it after a few days. I feel like we owe it to them to help in whatever way we can, especially considering Georgia still has almost 2000 troops assisting us in Iraq and Afghanistan while so many other "coalition" countries have already left.

Thoughts?
