excuse me while i rant a little

Spring break or not, it seems like there's an awful lot going on. I got a phone call tonight to mobilize effort against Texas HB3, Speaker Tom Craddick's lovely little piece of non-conservative fiscal legislation. There are lobbying efforts in Austin this week (oh man, I'm pissed that I wasn't able to make it down there) on everything from parental consent to anti-annexation law.
And then!! Today, in the Washington Times!!!!! Some people are shocked - SHOCKED - that illegals were able to get jobs at a nuclear power plant! http://www.washingtontimes.com/functions/print.php?StoryID=20050311-103449-5962r
It gives me a headache when I think about how people could possibly be shocked that this sort of thing is happening. And I certainly understand the outrage and indignation. The sooner the nation, and especially the president, wakes up to the fact that non-enforcement of immigration law is a direct threat to national security, the better.
I made the following prediction to my parents tonight: There will be another terrorist attack on American soil within President Bush's second term. The perpetrators will likely be from the same pool of Muslim extremists that have been attacking Americans and American interest since the 1970s, and will pull off the attack by abusing our weak borders, or our haphazard airport security, or something similar. It'll be well-known, too, and of course President Bush and his administration will be blamed. Here comes Senator Hillary Clinton, who will remind us that she was calling for the enforcement of immigration law and tightening the borders, and she'll sweep in the 2008 election. Democrats will ride her coattails nationwide in the 2010 midterm elections. And there will be the perfect set-up for all sorts of liberal reform that will leave conservatives wondering exactly where we went wrong, because after all, we had a mandate in 2004! How did we squander it? How come nothing was done when we had the chance?! And Karl Rove and his "conservative" cohorts will slink off in the night, leaving real conservatives and a confused, beaten Middle America holding the bag and trying desperately to shore up a system that began leaking long ago.
The budget allows for something like 2000 new border agents, President Bush hired only 200. Instead of working to target the people we know to be a threat at airports and seaports, we have this haphazard, random system of checking for threats. And illegals are being hired, not just by Wal-Mart and other corporations, but the federal government (in the case of the Air Force Academy) and nuclear power plants! This is a bad problem that is not being paid the proper kind of attention.
You know, I'm ecstatic about democratic revolution in the Middle East, and I still support our efforts in Iraq wholeheartedly. And I'm desperate for President Bush's social security reforms to go through. However, he's weak on this issue. I'm upset and I want something done about this.
