"Friends"

Friends are overrated, online and in real life. However, I also think the word 'friend' is overused. If a real friend disagrees with you, then there's not going to be any whining or name calling or finger pointing. In fact, if they are a real, true friend, they might not bring up any divisive issues at all! Imagine that. Maybe they'll just focus on the things you have in common instead.

It's your LJ. If someone doesn't like it, don't bother with them. They'll soon find someone or something else to to occupy their tiny minds. You shouldn't be in fear over people you don't even actually know. If that means you have to have only 5 friends instead of 50, then so be it. Those 5 friends will bring you more rewards than all the 50 combined. Or maybe I'm the crazy one.

Of course you're right. It just takes a lot of courage to walk the walk.

More than I've had, many times, unfortunately.

It's a Defintional Thing

"Friends List" is a lousy name for a blogroll, don't you think? Practically guarantees angst and wank.

That said, yes: In real life, you don't have to agree with someone all the time to love them.

I don't think "real" friends are over rated at all. I think that people just are more willing to label people friends that don't really fit the bill. Then they get dissapointed. And honestly, some of the best friendships are built because there is disagreement and arguements.

But I totally agree with your philosphy on LJ. There wouldn't be half the drama in people just ignored the idiots.

There wouldn't be much of an LJ usership if we did that. ;)

Some people like the friction though. I know I do; I just don't like it when it turns into name-calling. Some of my friends can discuss political issues with me, things we totally disagree on, and have it be a genuine discussion, not a fight.

I've found this to be true; some friends (in real life and otherwise) are able to have level-headed discussions. Others take everything personally.

But some of us like the drama! ^^ Nah, but seriously, I've found that if I stand my ground respectfully, fight like a rabid dog when attacked and generally behave otherwise, my journal becomes relatively drama free. Only once in a blue moon does a moonbat descend that warrants pest control.

Its hard many of those on my friends list are people I know IRL and I'm sort of the lone right winger among libs. Frankly I don't post alot of opinion stuff in my LJ for that reason. I'm perfectly ok with them being asshats sometimes but for some reason they can't extend the same courtesy.
