OK, so not everything here is absolutely correct. Allow for a bit of artistic license?

St. Bernard Parish no longer existed. He'd got that--somehow he'd got it. He tried again. New Orleans, he thought, has gone. He couldn't grasp it. He decided to start smaller again. Bourbon Street has gone. No reaction. He'd never seriously believed it existed anyway. Canal Street, he thought, has sunk forever. Slight tremor there. The French Quarter has been wiped, he said to himself, and that gave him a nasty knock. Cafe du Monde, he thought. There is no longer any such thing as a Cafe du Monde beignet.

He passed out. When he came round a second later he found he was sobbing for his mother.

Douglas Adams, as usual, nails things dead-on while still being silly and absurd. I've always found that tragedies like this are really difficult to truly feel for unless you have some personal connection to them, even a small, mundane one, like having eaten at a cafe that is no longer in existence.

New Orleans will rise from this disaster. I know it will. I just don't know how long it will take or in what form the city will take.

What I find most disturbing through all of this is, the complete and total breakdown of leadership in the city. Lootings, shootings, assaults. People just wandering around, no food, no water, no way to get out of the city. I mean, WTF?

But on a slightly lighter note (or darker, depending on your definition of gallows humor) after people broke into a gun shop and stole the guns, the police came along behind and took the amunition so the thieves wouldn't have any to reload the stolen guns!
