A liberal friend utterly disgusts me. He posts this on Facebook:

Something I just read: "PBS is pushing a leftist agenda and shouldn't receive funding for that reason alone"

My response: "I suppose you're right about one thing. PBS is an educational platform that believes in a smarter young population. So yes... I suppose it does push a leftist agenda, in that educated people don't easily allow themselves to be puppets for lying Republican bullshit mongers who would rather see them worked to death as a profit generating machine. If they could extract human soul-equivalents from the poor and just leave them as mindless slaves that would suffer for their greed... I don't think they would. I am fairly certain that rich Republicans have an actual desire for people to suffer and be degraded in the name of expanding their already over-inflated profits. Otherwise, we'd see more of a robotics revolution than we already have." (around this time, I think he stopped paying attention, but I didn't care) "Instead, we have a dwindling middle class being converted into the underpaid and overworked poor class. The initiatives that support the poor do so only to the point of keeping them viable workers. If you keep them desperate for work, when a few die off due to having no health care? Fuck it. There are another 100 in a 1 mile radius to replace the dead bastard who frankly, isn't missed except in the HR costs of having to file paperwork for a new employee. Capitalism has run its course. Time to get on with the future. But as you apparently did not watch PBS as a child, I'm fairly certain you don't understand most of the words I've used here. Thus, I must apologize for confusing you and trying to make you actually think for yourself, you child-like frightened little puppet."

Just. Oh my God. The hatred. The utter hatred. "Time to get on with the future" aka so everyone can pay for you?

This, my friends, is Obama's electorate.

Good Lord, save us from these people.

You actually count this intolerant clown a friend?

Dude. Dump that guy. His mind is so tightly closed, it's rusted shut. He's a drag and you don't need him.

Listen up people...DON'T PUT UP WITH THIS ANYMORE. Childish, condescending, self-centered, foolish "friends" (whether they speak of politics or anything else) are not worth one minute your time. Especially on the internet. Do you owe them anything? Are you in their will? You have nothing to lose but a loser. Click on that "unfriend" link and go on with your life.

This.

For the life of me, I cannot comprehend why conservatives put up with this treatment instead of just telling people like this that they have no use for hate-filled, intolerant and grossly ignorant "friends" who do nothing but insult them and condescend to them because in their unbridled arrogance think they have every right to do so.

Mind boggling.

Stand up to him, for goodness's sake! So they'll call you names? So what? Demand that he provide evidence for his statements, and then ask why he's so hateful and intolerant!

Sigh.

The really sad thing is you seem to think this person is a friend, whether a personal one, or just the FB acquaintance type "friend".

Wow. What a charming guy. They're are all the same. They act like such snobs who see the rest of us as stupid, illiterate Neanderthals who they must take great pains to educate. Back during the 2004 campaign I had a similar argument with a guy in email who kept pushing the "Bush is a smirking idiot" meme and kept telling me "I'm only trying to educate you about him." They all think they know what's best.

I'd unfriend him. I just mentioned here the other day that I had to unfriend a liberal "friend" on FB and she practically begged me to (the one who posted some Romney-bashing thing on her page, then said if we support him we should unfriend her and if we don't, anything political that we post on our own pages could get us deleted by her. Excuse me??). These people are just not worth it.

Ditch him like radioactive waste, or if you can't, ignore the hell out of him. But, if you can't, then ignore all politics with him, as we do have those friends who are all good people... until you talk politics and then, they're asshats. If he can't deal with that, that's his problem -- not yours.

This may cheer you up:

Honestly PBS should be a privately owned channel and not given money at all from the Gov't. I don't think that is ignorant at all. I do also think there is left wing stuff put into Sesame Street. People are blind if they don't see it. I think it's great for kids but it's not the end of the world the gov't stops giving money to tv channels. Seriously we are in a recession and waste so much money. The gov't doesn't have any business dipping it's fingers into things kids watch period.

I think Sesame Street is already a for-profit agency - look at all the stuff they sell! We should stop subsidizing it at the very least.

But there's a lot good on PBS, but I'm ambivalent about continued funding. Yeah, it's a drop in the bucket, but drops help fill buckets.

Fourthed. I thought that, when I laughed about that in the debate comments, it would be a one-night desperation-reaction that would leave them feeling rather embarrassed in the morning while they rustled up a new excuse.

But no, they're seriously rallying around Big Bird. This has to be one of the most humiliating ideological collapses of which I've ever heard. From 'Hope and Change' to 'NOOOOO BIG BIIIIIIIIRD'....

You know, I love Sesame Street as much as the next person... but it's a freaking TV channel! They need to fund themselves! If you don't want commercials during the shows themselves, show some beforehand! Even Internet tv is doing it!

Speaking of cuts, is NPR still govt funded? Because I wouldn't mind pulling that altogether.

I am fairly certain that rich Republicans have an actual desire for people to suffer and be degraded in the name of expanding their already over-inflated profits.

Would this guy count Warren Buffet and Bill Gates in the "rich" category? 'Cause you might want to remind him that they're die-hard liberals...as are most politicians in DC and actors in Hollywood.

in that educated people don't easily allow themselves to be puppets for lying Republican bullshit mongers who would rather see them worked to death as a profit generating machine

Then my college education has failed completely - I became more conservative since liberals scared me to death! Besides, if the alternative to working for a living is mooching off the government, then I'd gladly become a "profit-generating machine" if it meant I could remain self-sufficient.

Maybe you want to point this dude in the direction of Communist China, North Korea, or the Soviet Union under Stalin. "The future" isn't so bright.

Idiots, they're all idiots.

This person isn't "a liberal." They're a psycho. I wouldn't associate with anyone who talked this way and actually believed these things, let alone consider them a "friend", even in the vague FB sense...

Ask him where he acquired all this "data." I'm certain he won't have any real answer. He'll say something like "that's just the way it is", or "any intelligent person knows that..."

Date: 2012-10-05 10:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] neverfading.livejournal.com
And I'll say the same thing that I say every time: it's almost certain that this individual has no first-hand experience of poverty or suffering or "overwork."

People who talk this way are invariably pampered college students living on Mommy and Daddy's dime, or others who have similarly cushy upper-middle-class lives and have a completely distorted and naive view of the world.

If he hates capitalism, tell him to give up the computer that he used to post this comment. It was designed, marketed, and sold by an evil big company, after all.

This person knows nothing about work, business, economics, money, or prosperity. (Or capitalism).

He probably feels oppressed because he had to work at Baskin Robbins for one summer when he was 16.

For that matter, NOBODY in America has experienced the same level of poverty or the same level of "hard work" as people in other nations.

Living conditions are better here and now than they have ever been, in any society, in any country, in all of human history.

You hear that, you piece of shit? This is a country where even "the poor" have cars and televisions and indoor plumbing and running water and houses that have more than one room.

The human condition has NEVER been better than it is in the United States of America.

If your definition of "poverty" and "suffering" and "overwork" is that somebody had to buy their shoes at Wal-mart instead of Nordstroms or instead of receiving them for free from the government, then go hump a donkey.

Seriously, I am so tired of this nonsense.

I believe virtually everything should be privatized and the government should be in charge of virtually nothing. In fact, the government should barely *exist.*

I swear, the more that I read and think and the more that I work on developing my political/social convictions, I become so libertarian that I'm practically an anarchist.

The fact that he uses canned phrases like "dwindling middle class" shows that he's not doing any original thinking, he's simply parroting what he's heard/read and absorbed from other sources, while not examining what those phrases might actually mean, in the slightest. It's just mindless regurgitation of liberal boilerplate.

The way in which leftists hear something and then believe it so absolutely and so intensely is really and truly like a type of primitive and superstitious religious faith. They hear some canned phrase that sounds good and they believe it with a burning, totally unquestioning fervor. He might as well be pointing his finger and shouting "Witch, witch!" at you. It's the same type of emotional hysteria.

I firmly and absolutely believe that liberalism is a religion in its own right. Look at how these people act - and anyone who disagrees with them is crazy, evil, and/or stupid. I haven't figured out its deity structure, though :)

You can't reason with that level of entrenched ideology. Smile, make no sudden movements, as you slowly back away from the crazy. As for PBS- meh. I like PBS. But there's no earthly reason why we ought to be paying for it when we're broke. Big Bird's well past his majority and making a tidy income, he needs to move out of the government nest already. There's really no reason we ought to support entertainment; if it's any good, it'll earn its keep. (Sesame Street has made billions.) In the words of the great Robert Heinlein: “A government-supported artist is an incompetent whore. ”

Holy crap. No really, you need to dump him. This guy's head is so far up his own bum I don't think he'd even notice, but you'd be surprised how freeing it is to click REMOVE FRIEND on people like that. I spent way too much of my life giving people like this excuses for why I'm still friends with them and I'd hate to see anyone else go down that destructive path, because it does end up being very destructive when it blows.

Also, I do kinda hate Big Bird. o.o

Sesame Street was a bit before my time. My older (by 7 years) sister was into it. I was more into Blues Clues, ZOOM, and...>_> Batman the animated series. Even now my 2 and 3 year old nieces are completely bored by it. They need more stimulation and would much rather watch MLP (which I enjoy watching with them because SINGING) or Shake It Up (because DANCING).

PBS has only ever done two things for me; it introduced me to British comedies as a child, and it plays Sherlock before BBC America.
