So I'm a huge Mass Effect fan, and some people are work were telling me that since I like ME so much, I should watch Battlestar Galactica. Only thing is I guess there are multiple series or something, so I don't know where I should start. I guess I could just ask them, but because of the long weekend I won't be seeing them for awhile and I found out I can watch BSG free on Amazon, so I was hoping there are some ME fans here who have seen BSG and can tell me where to start. Or if you just want to fangirl Mass Effect that would be fine, too (though I haven't gotten the new Leviathan DLC yet). :D

There's a 70s show and a modern one.

Yep, there's a cheesy old one and a slick new one. I watched the new one on Netflix, but be careful. Apparently there were some mini episodes that take place between... I think seasons 2 and 3. These mini episodes were only posted on the web at the time, but weren't picked up by Netflix, so all this important story stuff happened and you'd have no idea about it unless you knew about the mini episodes.

Also, seriously, just stop watching when you get to the last two or three episodes. Pretend the production company exploded and tragically never finished the series. Trust me on this one.

Personally, I like the old one better. Yes, less slick... but also less "conflicted." Humanity, in the 70's show had an Iraeli feel - we're totally screwed, but we're going to survive, no matter what. It was confident in humanity's right to exist. The modern one seemed more... French.

You could look at it as the difference between Bond and Bourne.

Bond was a relic of a British Empire that was sure of its place in the world. He was calm, competent, and knew he was right. He didn't have the mental conflict and anguish of Matt Damon.

It's worth noting that the whole idea of Jason Bourne as created by Ludlum was created from the political scandals, revealed corruption, and CIA MKULTRA experiments of the early-to-mid 1970s.

Agreed. I find the modern one too nihilistic and depressing. French is a good way of putting it.

Been watching the old one over the past year, and loving it to pieces.

Agreed. I couldn't get into the new BSG no matter how hard I tried. Too much gray drama and vagueness vs. the old good vs. evil fight for survival of the original.
