A USA Today critique of "Glee"

USA Today's Robert Bianco has done a fascinating critique of "Glee," lamenting the recent loss of plot and characterization. (That said, beware of semi-recent spoilers within, my dear spoiler-phobes.) I haven't watched the show, so I can't comment in depth. However, I know quite a few of you will be interested, so here it is. Special thanks to Big Hollywood.

It’s hard to believe that Murphy couldn’t come up with anything better lines than, “I am not a witch” and “Obama is a terrorist.”

Don’t worry — a full-length Glee recap is imminent. I tuned in primarily to see what the assiduously “outrageous” Griffin would do to satirize one of her chief pop-culture enemies. Palin has called the comedian a “bully,” but after seeing Griffin meekly recite a lame joke about gay rights not being in the Constitution, the former Alaska governor must be feeling pretty cheery this evening.

That's the best the creator can do? Heh. Actually, that's most of what the Hollywood Left thinks of her, anyway. Palin should be amused, indeed.

Ken Tucker is usually sensible, and I'm glad he still has it. Heh. +1 for the review and the icon.

Seriously -- sounds like they're about as witty as they are original. What thrill could there possibly be in being the 2,035th show to parody Palin?

This is why I don't bother with modern comedy, if I wasn't with the Right (I guess I am by now). Mocking conservatives the first time, okay, funny. Not the 200,000 time, okay? Find new shtick, or go mock some lefties, like South Park. Lord knows they take themselves too darn seriously, as well.

Unrelated, but +1 for the icon. Actually, what made me stop being afraid of the Left's "raaaaaaaacism" card was the fact they said Palin was a full-on racist for wearing white. ZOMG! Nice reminder. Hee.

Hahahaha! Did they actually say that? I'd heard tell of it, but never actually heard any comments firsthand. How anyone can say something so ridiculous and expect to be taken seriously is beyond me!

Now, maybe I am wrong, but didn't I read somewhere that she was supposed to play a sympathetic conservative character. Weren't right-wing viewers supposed to identify with this character?

If that was the case, they failed epically. This appearance was recycled tea party jokes that were at best unoriginal and at worst a bit condescending. Of course, I hate Kathy Griffin, but I could have overlooked that if anything that came out of her mouth tonight was even remotely funny.

Am I wrong in thinking that this character was meant to be a "good" conservative? Am I getting articles I read mixed up?

As explained to me (and clarified in my entries on the subject), the sympathetic aspect was part of an interview done prior to Season 2 about potential future characters. Unfortunately, they just never got around to doing such a character. And then, we got this.

I thought her character was a much more obvious knock at Christine O'donnell. But I am a liberal and a Glee fan so I much less likely to be bothered by Kathy Griffin and her character than others here.
