Wow, I found that depressing. People seem to think that politics is something completely separate from day-to-day life. But politics is about life issues. Often, very important ones that affect all of us. It's about how one views the world, our culture, and our own lives.
What's the point of talking about important issues of this kind, if there's no hope of changing - or at the very least challenging - someone else's thinking on it?
I've found that I *can* sway people, but I can't turn them into a conservative. I can show them how some policies can be destructive and turn them into moderates or libertarians who don't think straight ticket. And *then* the ice cream.
THANK YOU. Someone gets it! I mean, I'm a damn conservative in California! If I didn't learn to just let stuff go, I'd have been beaten up a lot. (Probably by teachers.)
I got 3 friends I see and talk to regularly. We have everything in common except politics.
The first one, if I ever say anything political to him, he won't reply to me until I change the topic, so it's not worth it to debate him and be ignored. The second is a major pothead, and no matter how well thought out and backed up my POV on pot legalization is, she's not gunna stop being a pothead. And the third? He is the biggest democrat d-bag I know when it comes to political opinions, and no amount of debating will change his mind, so why not just have some damn ice cream and play some Halo?
That's what it is - living in a place that is 99% liberal teaches a person to be much more demure when it comes to political discourse. I live in Rhode Island, so I feel your pain.
My best friends from college, who are the people I am most in contact with nowadays, are all liberals, too. ^_^ One is an activist whose views are actually LEFT of Obama's if you can believe it. But she's awesome otherwise so yeah, I can completely relate!
