Miss USA Rima Fakih is stunning in a bikini as she rehearses for next week's Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.

But Rima, who is muslim, took a break from the stage to weigh in on the controversy over the proposed mosque to be built at the site near ground zero.

"I totally agree with President Obama with the statement on the constitutional rights of freedom of religion," said Fakih.

But the 24-year-old says while she supports freedom of religion in America, the people behind the mosque should consider the feelings of the families who lost loved ones on 9/11.

"It shouldn't be so close to the World Trade Center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than religion," said Fakih.

Fakih, who was born in Lebanon and raised in Michigan, is one of the 83 contestants competing in the pageant, which will be broadcast Monday night.

Good for her! (And may she be kept safe for having the courage to speak publicly!)

And protect her for being brave enough to wear a bikini instead of a burqa.

I'll say. Both seriously and facetiously.

There are many Muslims who have spoken out against the proposed mosque near Ground Zero. Look at the Wikipedia entry for the project. The best article I've read on the subject was actually one in my local paper, the Ottawa Citizen, here (http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/Mischief+Manhattan/3370303/story.html), written by Raheel Raza and Tarek Fatah of the Muslim Canadian Congress. They even refer to much of the media as "teary-eyed bleeding heart liberals" who are "are blind to the Islamist agenda in North America".

Don't let Perez Hilton ask her anything. >> He probably doesn't like her, either.

I think she has it absolutely right. There's freedom of religion, and the government shouldn't be doing anything to stop them from building it. But we also have the freedom of speech to speak out against it and to say it's just flat-out a bad idea. Both are part of American tradition, and both should be valued.

What? I thought "freedom of speech" means I get to say whatever I want and no one gets to disagree with me or tell me I'm wrong/inappropriate! ;)

Well, it does mean that so long as you're one of the protected species!
But if you're white, male, Christian, and esp. if you're conservative, no. This right was not given to you by the gov't :( Sorry.

Might make an exception if you convert to Islam, though.

There is always that option for me, eh? heh.

I guess so XD Since black/gay/female conservatives don't exist, Islam is your only option.

Too bad, as I love black/gay/female conservatives. hehe. Seriously, though, I don't think I'd be cut out for a Neo-Nazi. I don't like to shave my head, and I love Israel, so yep, that is a dealbreaker, particularly the latter. Hehe.

Oh you love them do you?! I bet you like purple unicorns, too! And Gryphons! THEY'RE JUST AS REAL. /RedEye

I was gonna say - Shaving your head is sacrilege to the Muslim faith, isn't it? XD

My secret is out, as the purple unicorns are my one weakness. Nuuuuuuuuuu.....

Oh, yeah. Oh, well, there is the Klan. Might as well since we have to deal with that oh, so trendy "Tea Klaner" slur. Hah....

Tea Klaner. I may like this one. It sounds German. >:) TEE HEIL!

Nothing like a good Cross firing with the family after dinner.

I did write on the Tea Klaner slur on here a while ago, so, yeah, it is a legitimate Left slur. Lovely.

(Yes, but do we get the fun helmets with spikes on them? Heh.)

Anything from them is a slur. :| Unless it's to their own kind, they can't say anything without condescending.

(No; that would mean you have to sacrifice your cone hat :( )

(Oh, damn. You're right. What's a supposed White supremist supposed to do?)

+1. Good for her, and now I do feel sad that she lost to Miss Mexico. She should have won, blast it.
