Ground Zero Mosque is "Go."
Aug. 3rd, 2010 12:25 pmThat's what Fox News just reported.
The panel ruling on if the building the mosque would replace deserved historical-status protection decided--unanimously--that it didn't. So, the building will be torn down and this Cordoba Institute will take its place.
I seriously cannot belive this.
It is obviously a test, from the radical Muslims and from the Left. The Islamists want to see how far Americans will let them go with offending us in the name of "tolerance." The Left wants to see how the Right will react, and if/when something happens, hold it up as evidence of our radical tendancies.
Right now this seems like a no-win scenario. If Americans (right or left) continue to block this mosque or do anything to hamper its construction, vandalize it after the fact, etc, the Islamists building the mosque become the "victims" (Americans jumping to their deaths from burning towers 500 feet away? When did that happen?). If the mosque is built, the Islamists become the "victors." They will show their resolve to subdue and eventually conquer us is much greater than our will to resist them.
Now what?

That is exactly right.
That's exactly what this is, a test. I don't know what can be done legally, but they have to find some way to keep fighting this. Otherwise the Islamist/Left alliance will have won, and for all the reasons you have listed here.
This is an abomination. How DARE they?

Date: 2010-08-03 09:40 pm (UTC)Thank you for finally showing your true colors. I was one of the fools here, duped into thinking you were a reasonable and fair minded individual. You're just another, "It's all the conservatives' fault!" liberal.
I am happy to have that out in the open. Thank you.

Date: 2010-08-03 08:13 pm (UTC)Now let's pass around the hat to build a memorial to the Israeli athletes murdered by muslim "Palestinians" in "Palestine", a monument to the MOSSAD avengers in Bethleham, and a victory monument commemorating the Jewish defeat of the muslims in the 6 Days War in Mecca. Give me the PayPal link, I'll contribute.

Date: 2010-08-03 08:17 pm (UTC)As New Yorker, let me correct your mistake (you are apparently in Arizona). The proposed center is not 500 feet away from the WTC site, it's two blocks away.

Date: 2010-08-03 08:22 pm (UTC)That said, did you really expect the committee to rule that the current building was a historic landmark? Do you really think the building is a landmark or important historically? Or would you have accepted a dishonest ruling, which was in fact motivated by a desire to stop the Cordoba House project for other reasons?

Date: 2010-08-03 09:46 pm (UTC)Despite the Cordoba Center's high-minded rhetoric about healing and stuff, I have noticed that it didn't bother 'em one bit that several families of 9/11 victims found the proposed location at the very least insensitive. Two NYC blocks isn't super close, but it's definitely walking distance. Remains and debris from the WTC certainly went a lot further than two city blocks. If nothing else, this whole thing shows you the intent behind this center isn't as sterling as its proponents claim and it shows you once again, where the ruling class's sympathies truly lie.

Date: 2010-08-03 10:29 pm (UTC)We don't want a mosque to Islam built within sight of the place where 3,000 Americans were murdered in its name because we find it offensive.
Yet, their demands were viewed as at least worth consideration. Ours, apparently, are not.

Date: 2010-08-04 01:32 am (UTC)I don't want to see a mosque on that site that to them commemorates a victory. But that doesn't override their rights to build on property that they own.
We can certainly turn it around: this is now the mosque near a site that shows we are not conquered and big enough to let them think they have a victory. We can recognize that our Constitution permits them to build because it protects all members of our communities, even those who want us dead.

Date: 2010-08-04 04:09 am (UTC)On the other hand, I'm really not sure what good building it there will do for Muslim and non-Muslim relations. I'm not convinced the imam really cares about that anyway. (I'd also be curious to know where he's getting the funding for all of this, but apparently we aren't allowed to know that.)
On the bright side, that block probably won't have to worry about Muslim terrorist attacks once the mosque/cultural whatsit is built.

Date: 2010-08-04 12:12 pm (UTC)THIS!!!!! Totally agree, this is the absolute heart of the matter.
As for your last point, I wouldn't count on it providing any protection. There are plenty of Muslim sects that are more than willing to narrow their definition of "Muslim" down to exclude other sects or groups they disagree with. Plenty of radicalists would probably say that just by living in America, the Muslims in that center are traitors. :~(

Date: 2010-08-04 10:10 pm (UTC)I, for one, am pretty sure that people who are building a "cultural center" like this--that is going to BY DESIGN cause offense to people who have every right to be offended--really have no interest whatsoever in promoting cultural "understanding." But maybe that's just me.
But I think putting up a dog grooming shop on one side of this "cultural center" and a butcher shop specializing in pork on the other is a capital idea. Let's just see how "tolerant" and "understanding" the Cordova Center would be to something like that...
