Earlier in the week, Karl Rove wrote a WSJ op-ed about his greatest mistake during his White House years. Apparently, he waxes about failure to respond to the Left's "Bush lied about WMDs" meme and cites specific Democrat rhetoric. He is quite apologetic, especially as many of us saw the meme's effect in action.

Ironically, I'm currently listening to his interview with Dennis Prager. How about that? Heh.

Date: 2010-07-17 05:53 pm (UTC)The lies that were told by the Democrats and their liberal supporters remain to this day. The hatred of GWB was founded upon the idea that he had lied to get us into war. This hatred grew and spread to all corners of the globe. It is a great part of the reason why Obama was elected and why we're in such a mess today.
It is now a part of accepted history that 'Bush lied, people died'. This falsehood has been repeated so many times through the years, from so many angles, that people no longer even question it. It is taken as accepted fact. Even those who once supported President Bush came to believe it! Or at least to waver, "Might it be true?"
As I read back and remembered all those events, I could kick myself as well. I was not nearly as aggressive at fighting those lies as I am now. I should have been.
Perhaps he and the Bush Administration never dreamed that this lie would take hold the way it did. Perhaps they just assumed that the facts were there for anyone to see, so why bother wasting time and effort fighting it too hard, when there were so many other issues to deal with. I can understand that mentality.
But wow, were they wrong.

Date: 2010-07-18 07:36 pm (UTC)Many people feel this is a waste of time. It does feel that way sometimes. But lies take hold and they become the accepted narrative, for years. Or for generations. This influences and affects everything from elections to public policy that affects all of us to the shape of our culture itself. It's *that* serious.
The problem is that these lies are so relentless and come from so many angles that it's nearly impossible to keep up. You could be at it all day, every day, and it still would not be enough.
I'm not sure how to get around that difficulty. All I know is that giving up and staying silent is not an option.
