I can't comment too deeply on the Oscar nominations for '04, since I have not seen most of those films. But notice what isn't listed: to quote from this round-up,

Michael Moore's gamble to hold his hit film "Fahrenheit 9/11" out of the documentary category - to boost its best-picture prospects - backfired. The movie was shut out across the board.

*grin*
I take back a few of the unkind things I've said about you, Academy.

Don't mind me, I'm busy dying from happiness.

YES! My faith in the Oscars has been renewed.

But did they think they were evening out the decision by not recognizing "The Passion of the Christ" in any way, shape or form?

Since it was delivered entirely in Aramaic (sp?), perhaps even a nod for best foreign language film?

(my favorite film of 2004 was MIRACLE... it wasn't a cinematic powerhouse.. it just makes me feel good every time I watch it (and I watch it a lot, mainly when I feel the need to "feel good" :)

Well-- I stand corrected and my premise is entirely wrong :) the list that was shown on THE DRUDGE REPORT didn't have that info.. I have fallen from grace in honoring the creedo: "Trust But Verify" --R.Reagan

Both Miracle and The Passion are out for rent or purchase at places like Blockbuster.. And I take back what i said about Miracle not being a cinematic powerhouse.. They have an extra on the DVD that shows how they made the film.. great lengths were taken to make, what you can image as being difficult scenes to shoot, REALLY realistic. It is a POWERHOUSE. And you don't have to be a sports/hockey fan to really enjoy the movie.

Your assignment for the weekend: RENT MIRACLE :)

From what I've heard, the problem with the foreign language nomination is that Aramaic has no country. All the movies in that category are from a country and in, presumably, that country's official language. Passion was a US-based film (at least for the background stuff), and Aramaic isn't exactly one of our languages.

Now, I'm sure they could have figured out some way to get around that, especially if they could fudge the rules for a documentary for Bowling two years ago...but at least people have talked about it and given a reason. *shrug*

(And I love Miracle, too :D)

Actually, as I understand it, "Foreign Language Film" is more of a "foreign film" award. If Mel Gibson were, say, Italian, or if he had had predominantly Italian financial backers, Passion could've been submitted as an Italian film, regardless of the language it was shot in.

but wouldn't a documentary have to be something factual just for starters?

Like your icon, btw, star sign. Melody of Oblivion is cool. Disturbing, but cool.

Haha, didn't even realize that til you said it. Sorry, Michael-boy, but half-truths, deceits, selective omission and misrepresentations don't count as a documentary...

Oh good! That means I don't have to turn the channel during the documentaries as to avoid seeing his ass on the screen. ^^
