It is unclear from this story how this man's situation came about. But it sure is a sobering contrast to the view of those people who claim that we are big meanies for saying that the criminals who attempt to cross our border ought be prevented from doing so and/or sent back if they succeed, and that as a nation we have every right to create and enforce laws to that effect.
As a personal note, I would rather be killed outright than to anticipate a future of 8 years in a North Korean labor camp. I think the terror itself would kill me before I even made it to my cell. I can only imagine that such a fate must be the closest thing to hell here on earth.
And even then, I think the imagining would fall short of the reality.

I will have to look around to see if there is more information about who he is and how he got into this horrible situation. I can't think of anything more terrifying than being stuck in NK like that. China & Iran might even be preferable. In Iran they may just kill you and be done with it. China is an up-and-coming world power and does have their reputation to consider. The regime in NK couldn't care less about any of that. They have no problem doing this type of thing to their own citizens!

And if you go onto that Google Earth application (or whatever it is called) there is plugin that has all of DPRK's gulags, public execution grounds, hard labor camps (I don't think they have anything that's not "hard labor," honestly), etc.
I think I agree with you. I'd rather be dead than "live" in one of those camps.
