coldblossom.livejournal.comSo I was thinking...
The new Medal of Honor is coming out and it looks really good. Though a coworker of mine mentioned to me that there is "some controversy" surrounding the game due to the fact that the the players can choose to play as the Taliban (specifically). On one hand, I feel that maybe its a bit too soon (I mean, you can play as Nazis in a plethora of FPS). On the other, the team playing as Americans can blow them up. So, balance.
Anyway, my thought as I was watching the latest commercial was, what if a FPS was designed that adhered to the actual rules of engagement (ROEs) that Americans are currently being forced to follow by politicians and the overly-invasive media? ROEs that state that Americans basically can't fire until they are fired upon; that they cannot continue to fire if the hostile throws down his weapon--nevermind that he could be throwing it down to free his hands to detonate a IED or something--ROEs that keep our military constantly pinned-down and on the defensive.
My conclusion is that everyone would hate it. There would be no way to win against the enemy force that doesn't have to follow the same rules. People play video games to win, not to come to a tie or a loss. Its funny, that teenagers and little kids know what it takes to win (shoot the enemy till he's dead and then blow up his base) but our politicians and even some of our military leadership don't. Why don't the show the same basic understanding when it comes to real wars, where the outcome is so much more than a simple high score?
Anyway, just a random thought.
