coldblossom.livejournal.comPhoenix today was ruled by the protesters. They controlled traffic, they controlled the police. A police officer died and two others were shot yesterday as part of an undercover drug bust gone wrong. We kind thought perhaps the protesters would tone it down so as not to burden the police in a time of mourning (all the flags around were at half mast), but of course they didn't.
They blocked our rail traffic. They blocked our intersections downtown by sitting and/or laying in them. Downtown around the jail was completely shut down as they protesters tried to invade the jail. This action forced Sheriff Joe to postpone his preplanned crime-suppression sweep. The protesters hoped it would be for days, maybe even a week.
It was an hour (insert Sheriff Joe as Chuck Norris joke here).
He had to divert his deputies back to the jail from their sweep positions so they could protect the jail from this assault. Riot gear was brought out. People chained themselves to the doors and to each other and they were all arrested (many of them planned on being arrested, wanted to be arrested).
According to my local news, 2/3rds of the protesters were bused in from California. I could see Greyhound buses on the TV as well as lots of purple shirts, though the SEIU was never mentioned (the shots were from above, so I wasn't able to see logos). One of our local politicians called Phoenix "hell" because of the "racial hatred and fear" going on right now. Somehow I don't think she'll be reelected given that the vast majority of this state is pro-SB1070. Currently, there is a concert going on down there (wtf, right?). Yesterday, I saw people in the crowd selling crappy jewelry on those portable racks they can carry around...just like something you'd see in say, Cozumel or any other tourist trap in Mexico.
I also saw Mexican flags. Lots of them. I guess they forgot how bad it looks to wave a foreign flag (any foreign flag) while at the same time claiming to love the country you are demanding rights and privileges from. There were plenty of signs in Spanish, and shouting in Spanish. It seemed like these people were attempting to incite a riot and it fell flat when a) supporters of SB1070 failed to show up in any noticeable numbers, and b) the police refused to react to their taunting.
Eventually the protests turned to Sheriff Arpaio specifically. Today it was also announced that the Mexican drug cartels have put a $1 million bounty on his head. The timing, I'm sure, is no coincidence.
So yes, a crazy day in Phoenix and it is only going to get worse going forward. Oh, and I'm watching Sheriff Paul (Babeau) on Greta right now and he mentioned Arizona being the primary corridor for black-tar heroin to come into the U.S.. To that point, I'd never heard of this drug until the U.S. Marshals came looking for my next-door neighbor here. He was part of a ring trafficking the stuff.
