...has to be one of my favorite movies ever. Moreso now that my brother is a Navy aviator (snerk). I was just watching it and, aside from enjoying the straight-faced humor, I realized its actually fairly patriotic as well. I mean, it
1) depicts US military superiority (OK, in a roundabout way)
2) makes bad-guys out of anyone who tries to exploit the military ("you put a bunch of brave pilots in danger. That's my job!")
3) bombs Saddam Hussein
4) shows the USA as the good-guy making the world safe for democracy (actual line in the film).
This movie was made in 1993. What a vast difference versus today when the only military movies that come out are things like "Redacted" and "Stop Loss" where the USA and the US military are evil and servicemen are dupes that are exploited. Sad. I want more "Hot Shots" and less of those.
Speaking of...I hear they're floating a possible second Top Gun movie (another big favorite of mine, naturally) and they're "talking" to Tom Cruise about reprising his role as "Maverick." I am totally against this idea, for the reasons stated in the last paragraph. Hollywood doesn't make patriotic/fun/pro-military/pro-USA films anymore and I do not want them ruining Top Gun for me. Plus, there is no way they could ever top the volleyball scene. Not gonna happen.
