Yay AZ!
This I'd heard about a few months ago and I wrote my reps to encourage them to vote for it (glad they listened). Now apparently we're the target of Obama's propaganda machine as I've already started seeing pro-national healtchare commercials. If Arizona passes this next year, we'll set an awesome precedent that will probably encourage more states to adopt similar measures to protect themselves from ridiculous and harmful federal mandates. I am quite glad to see this as I've been concerned that Arizona is going purple (influx of liberals from California plus illegal immigrants). What concerns me, though, is that in light of the extremely large number of uninsured "residents" (legal or not) here that ACORN or some other Brownshirt-type organization will show up on our doorstep to try to cram this down our throats using misinformation and even racism to do it.
This was on our ballot last year and I remember voting for it, but I think it was not worded well and there wasn't much advertising around it as it didn't pass (barely). I am hoping with all of the commercials that are being run (such as by the man who owns Solantic) that voters will be much better educated this time around.
Under Arizona's Health Care Freedom Act, which was passed by the state legislature this week, a voting initiative will be placed on the 2010 ballot that, if passed, will allow the state to opt out of any federal health care plan. Five other states -- Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming -- are considering similar initiatives for their 2010 ballots.
The proposal, which now goes to the Senate, would insert language in the Arizona Constitution disallowing any law or rule compelling any person or individual to participate in any health-care system. It also would guarantee the right of individuals to pay directly for health care, and for doctors and others to treat people who want to pay cash and don't want to enroll in a government-provided program.
It is aimed at proposals being weighed in Washington that would require all employers to purchase coverage for their workers and all individuals to have health insurance. There also is discussion of creating a government-run insurance company that would compete with private insurers. [link]
