"Abortion is a blessing" and abortionists are doing "holy work," says the Rev. Katherine Ragsdale, dean of the Episcopalian Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. This "sermon" (which does not mention Christ, and only mentions God once or twice) was given in front of a congregation in Birmingham, AL in the summer of 2007, but has only gotten widespread attention through the column of Catholic blogger Damian Thompson, who writes for the UK
Daily Telegraph. His thoughts are
here, worth reading, as well as most of the comments.
( Here is the full text of Rev. Ragsdale's sermon. Not for the faint of heart; younger and/or more sensitive readers may want to read with a parent or other trusted adult. )Rev. Ragsdale was so proud of this speech that she had it up on her blog for over a year, but took it down this weekend after it came to international attention and dozens of people, both for and against abortion/ abortion rights, left comments asking her to repent and retract her statements. Rev. Ragsdale is also the president of an
extreme left think tank.
I really wonder what god she thinks is blessing us. I also wonder what that congregation's reaction is. Question for
therightfangirl: Do you agree with Damian Thompson that this is not a representation of radicalism but of growing religious mainstream? I've run this by some of my more liberal, pro-choice friends and even they were really shocked.
(Heated debate is fine, but I expect we can discuss this issue here with greater civility and decorum than in other forums. Please? Makes big eyes at you all.)
