Politics is a messy business and hitting below the belt--or what you imagine to be below the belt--is often the order of the day. In this fellow's campaign the racist smears and bigoted reminders that the candidate was "the Other" ran amok.



Nonetheless, a bunch of Southern, white, conservative, Bible-belt Protestants were pleased to elect a Catholic immigrant named "Piyush" to their governorship.

It reminds me of that Zenna Henderson short story, "The Closest School."

Sometimes, you just have to smile.
