I just watched the movie Valiant and I highly recommend it. It's an inspiring, patriotic WWII movie of the kind they don't make anymore. Watching this movie, you can believe that the last 4 decades of cynicism had never been shoved down our throats. They let the bad guys be bad, the good guys be good, and the heroes be heroes. It's only a little sad that we have to go to animated pigeons to get this!
Near the beginning, I briefly thought the carrier pigeons the protagonist admired so much were going to turn out to be self-centered jerks, thus disillusioning the young hero. My fears were unfounded: the heroes really were heroes. The one pigeon who winds up enlisting but doesn't want to fight isn't presented as someone to emulate or admire, and he redeems himself later.
Rent this movie. Especially if you have kids.
