Does anyone around here watch Bones? Last night's episode shocked me by revealing its protagonist, Dr. Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist (albeit a socially awkward one), as pro-death penalty. The episode centered around a man on death row, Epps, that the other main character, FBI agent Booth, had put away seven years ago. Epps was about to be executed when, predictably, the PD rushes in with a new fact and wants Booth, and by extension, Brennan, to follow the lead to exonerate Epps before his time is up. Not only did the show shock me by having Brennan be unapologetically pro-death penalty, the episode ended with Brennan and Booth discovering evidence that showed that Epps really was the murderer. Because the new evidence required a trial, Epps's execution would be delayed, and he would go on living several more years as the new evidence went through the trial and appeals process.
Maybe this kind of ending was wimping out by not actually executing the murderer, and maybe the show wimped out by having Brennan be the pro-DP character (although Booth seemed to be pro-DP also), but I was just excited to see a show that didn't portray a person on death row as totally wrong/framed/dA DP iS dA eV0l!11!11/virtuous crusader for justice.
