First of all, it's bad enough that now the likes of Lee Malvo, a sociopathic murderer who terrorized millions as part of his "Beltway sniper" spree in 2002, will never get his day with Mr. Hypodermic Needle. As someone who was looking over my shoulder every time I went to get gas when that was happening, this cheeses me off to no end. If you are a serial killer, I don't care if you can't buy a beer yet. Your butt ought to be on death row.

Thanks to the "wisdom" of the Supreme Court, young gang bangers, kids who feel like whacking romantic rivals or their parents, and teenage terrorists can kill without fear of anything more than a long prison sentence. Maybe. This is all bad enough.

But what's really outrageous and ought to scare the you-know-what out of everybody is that the majority cited the United Nation's "Declaration of the Rights of the Child" and foreign law in their decision!

Excuse me, but the Court's job is to interpret OUR laws, OUR Constitution, not impose foreign law on us when it's convenient (I doubt the Supremes would want to import Polish laws on abortion or Irish laws on divorce). This unelected body of imperialists is chipping away at our sovereignty and our right to govern ourselves. The Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves.

Thank you!

Thank you to this community for existing, that is. It's done me a world of good.

You see, for the last couple of years, I've been keeping a very low profile in fandom. Too many Democrats screeching "Nazi!" at me, etc. One compared me to Jerry Falwell because I disagreed with her once and demanded, "What in HELL makes you think you have any right to think that?!? I cannot even express how livid I am." Ahh, those tolerant, compassionate liberals. I could go on with my horror stories, but I won't. The upshot was that I abandoned my LJ, started mostly lurking on the fannish mls I'm on, and became very cautious about striking up fannish correspondences.

In fact, I tried, very hard, to leave fandom. But even though I tried to, I couldn't quite achieve escape velocity. There were two reasons for this. The first is that I'm too addicted to my main fandom, Eroica. I'm one of those who's found her One True Fandom, and while I might have the odd fling with other fandoms, I remain true to Eroica even when everyone else is caught up in the enthusiasm over the latest movie or TV show.

The other reason is that only fen experience fiction the way I do. Mundanes might love a work of fiction, but they don't live in it the way we do. We ruminate over it, daydream about it, map out different interpretations of it, find deeper meanings that the creators might well have never dreamed of, analyze it to death.... Mundanes watch a movie, say "That was good!" and get on with their lives. Not us! That's really why fandom meant so much to me, once I found it. So feeling like I had been exiled from it was wrenching.

Now, however, a mere two years after vowing never to go to a con again, I just registered for Connexions. Oh, I know we right-wing fen will still be in the minority there -- there'll be two others there that I know of, if the one who's a Libertarian will indulge my bracketing her with us ;-) -- but just knowing that others exist out there gives me the courage to go and have fun with it again. Thank you all!

There's still a few more days before the registration deadline for Connexions, btw, if any of you live near Baltimore. If you go, look me up. I'll be the dorky Republican wearing the suit.

I am very disappointed in the US Supreme Court. That they usurped the rights of 19 states and over this case! The US courts are out of control. This was one of the coldest of murderers I've ever heard. I don't care that he was under 18 when he did it, in fact he did it for kicks because he WAS underage and thought he would get away with it because of that, and it looks like he did now. It was very much premeditated. I totally disagree with them striking down the ability to execute minors. Sometime it is justified.
