It's worth pointing out, and this is important, that Operation Wide Receiver, the "gunwalking" operation carried out under Bush, was carried out with the active consent and cooperation of the Mexican government. Nor did that ever get anybody killed because the ATF didn't just take serial numbers in that scenario, but closely, physically, followed the guns in question.
Basically, this is yet another apples-to-oranges comparison. I'm not saying this was a good tactic under Bush (the "why I don't like Bush very much" lay is best saved for another time, though), but the situations are fundamentally and substantially incomparable.
