Johnny Depp Fangirl Moment!

Front page of Yahoo - you can't read this story or watch this clip without smiling...

Beatrice, a 9-year-old student at a school in London's Greenwich neighborhood, wrote a letter to Captain Jack Sparrow, the character made famous by Johnny Depp in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series. The letter made its way to Depp -- who's in England at the moment, shooting the fourth film in the franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" -- and he made a surprise visit to Beatrice's school, according to BBC News.

A 2-minute clip of his in-character visit (below) has made it to the Internet, but reportedly he spent 15 minutes in all with Beatrice and her classmates. And though the reason for Beatrice's letter was to seek Captain Jack's advice on staging a mutiny against her teachers, Captain Jack went against his renegade principles, diplomatically recommending to Beatrice that a mutiny would probably get her into trouble.

See, this gives me hope: even lefties can do some good! ;D I love Johnny Depp!

Happy Friday, all!

LOL, I couldn't understand a word he said, but that sure was nice of him to do.

It's interesting that nobody seems to be mentioning that Disney owns the image of Jack Sparrow, and there's no way he'd be allowed to make that appearance without Disney's full endorsement. They should either get some of the credit for doing a good deed, or they're getting ready to release another movie and they're looking for free publicity.

I'm not trying to be cynical (I guess it comes naturally), but I find the omission of Disney's involvement in every single article I've seen on this to be quite intriguing.

I wouldn't fault Disney even if the time was not coincidental. I know how much Disney does for the Make a Wish Foundation and Ronald McDonald house, so they pretty much get a free pass with me! :-)

I've always thought that Depp was a really nice guy, in addition to being unbelievably talented. His ability to switch characters never ceases to amaze me. I remember as a teen, watching him on 21 Jump Street and thinking "That one, right there, he's going to be something special." You could just tell he had the magic in him from the beginning.

Since he appears in costume with other "pirates" in tow, I can see this as a bit of free PR for the movie. And it doesn't take anything away from him, either. Totally awesome.

Well, yes, of course it's excellent publicity for the next movie; but believe me, if Depp hadn't WANTED to do it, no way would Disney have been able to compel him to play ball. Stars on location are the Sun King - their every whim is pandered to, especially stars of Depp's wattage. I expect he has kids himself with Vanessa Paradis and genuinely wanted to go.
