The thing that we are forgetting in any discussion of this is that these appointments are political by their very nature. Was Ms. Simpson nominated for the position in an attempt to curry favor with a group? Most likely, but it does open the door for folks to realize that trans-folk are able to do a good job. Also, it is being used to curry favor with the Sec. of State's former supporters, amongst who The Leader's popularity is slipping. I do not see it as any 'quota' system, but rather a repeat of the time-honored tradition of using appointments to pay off political debts. It is used by whichever party is in power. This can lead to possibly gaining the same legal protections enjoyed by other minorities, such as race and sex. Which we trans-people currently do not enjoy. I personally believe that none of it should be a factor as to whether one is qualified for a position, but unfortunately many hiring managers do not. YIS, WRI
