I just read on someone else's Lj regarding this silly "protest" by some unhappy with the election results that consists of not spending any money tomorrow on Inauguration Day. Why anyone who claims to care about "the little guy" would stiff the protelariat for some futile symbolic purpose is beyond me, but I lived in the D.C. area for 14 years through three inaugurations. Were there conservatives protesting on the streets during Clinton's inaugurations? Was Rush calling for all Republicans to boycott businesses to show the right's displeasure? No, of course not. Anyone who disagrees with President Bush had their chance to "protest" November 2. Beyond that, all you're being is a petulant crybaby. It's like Jets fans taking to the streets in protest because the Steelers beat them. Ditto for the whining about security costs (as though it would have cost less if Kerry was the one being inaugurated), the glitziness (but the Golden Globules went on without protest as will the Oscars and Grammys), and so on.
Then there's something else I'm sure many of you can relate to...the liberal fan(s) on your message board or list who just can't keep politics out of their posts. This drives me nuts. If I wanted political debate, I'd go find it elsewhere. Otherwise I'm there to talk about fandom stuff. I don't beat people over the head with my political, social, or religious beliefs. It's less stressful that way. Yet some of these fans either want political debates or they think everyone actually agrees with them. Not all liberal fans do this and sometimes there are fans on the right who insist on pushing their views on everyone. But geez, can't people keep politics out of things just for once?

Date: 2005-01-19 02:11 pm (UTC)And that "don't spend any money tomorrow" idea is about the dumbest thing ever. They seem intent on bringing down the entire country just because they're not happy. They're like psychotic ex's: "If I can't have you, America, no one will!!" :)

Date: 2005-01-19 02:14 pm (UTC)As far as the boycott protest, you are absolutely right. It just screams LEFT ideas. Like any of that would even slow down Bush being sworn in as president. Then again about 95% of their ideas have no basis in practical workable application.
I'll tell you something else that really really REALLY pisses me off, is when LJ members from another country say that it's not fair and they should have been allowed to vote in the election. Then Kerry would have won. I have trouble not writing a blasting nasty comment back to them. Usually after I write it, I erase it before I post it, and just leave a note that says that we'd be happy to let them vote... as soon as they've completed their citizenship paperwork to become a US citizen. Of course, the liberals that moan they want to move to Canada I happily give the link to the Canadian web site on citizenship.

Date: 2005-01-19 02:16 pm (UTC)I think I hurt my sides from laughing when I first heard about the "Black Thursday" protest. Yes yes, I'll not go to work and write my boss telling him why. All it would result in me not getting paid for a day of work, and that hurts me, not them (in the long run). And you're exactly right: the day to protest was November 2, and Americans came out in record numbers to state their minds. If more people had spoken out for Kerry and he'd won, I certainly wouldn't begrudge them a peaceful inauguration! I remember watching Clinton's first in school in 4th grade, hehe.
As for the glitz and glamour, apparently during another war or disaster there were no inauguration parties, just the ceremony. Okay, that might be a legitimate criticism, that we're spending money on parties when we could be helping tsunami victims or whatever...but, like you said, if they're so concerned about the tsunami victims, then they could cancel their Oscar parties and donate those saved funds.

Date: 2005-01-19 02:49 pm (UTC)As far as aid goes, we are sending pots and pots of money over there now. We don't need to send more money, we need to send people to manage it. Take a guess just how much of the relief aid will actually GET to the people needing it. It's about 30 - 50 cents on the dollar. The rest is skimmed off or stolen. Just go back and look at all the despots that became rich because they stole all the "relief aid" that was sent to their countries.
Then again, I rather like your example of we'll do it as soon as they cancel the grammies and golden globe and donate that money.

Date: 2005-01-19 04:52 pm (UTC)And I know we're sending plenty of money (I especially liked when the gov't first came out and said one number and the libs bitched about how uncaring Bush is...and then he upped it *tenfold* and they complained that we didn't have that kind of money. Yeah. Way to sound intelligent, folks), but it's still an obvious argument. Not necessarily a good one, because I say live it up, man! But it's one of the less inane gripes the left has had over the inauguration ;)
Help with the logistics

Date: 2005-01-19 02:27 pm (UTC)And then there's me. Who has been fighting for a Young Republicans club.
So don't worry--I'll be there with my American flag and Bush 2004 pin. I'll be there to laugh at those who freeze their asses off just to go home angry and pissed. And I'll be there to shout hoorays at Republican Gerlach during the reception.
There are more of us than we let on, it seems. Frankly, I think keeping our numbers a secret is a great idea: It allows for maximum giggle-age when the libs LOSE HORRIBLY.

Date: 2005-01-19 06:56 pm (UTC)Yeah, I think you're right. No one suspects me at my [annoyingly liberal] office, for instance. I'm not a very confrontational person, so I don't look for a fight. I just quietly vote Republican, support some conservative causes in my spare time, and occasionally try to point out things the libs might not have considered.
Kudos on getting to go tomorrow! I hope you have a blast!

Date: 2005-01-19 05:52 pm (UTC)Incidentally for the "slacktivists" (love that!), the people who come for the Inauguration spend thousands in the DC area and do a lot for our local economy, so I doubt the lack of a few hippies' dimes will matter much.
